I see.

Well.. I mean... that a810 is well beyond my needs. I don't need such precision and refinement ...and the multiple sources of problems (expensive ones too) that usually come with such a device.

Hmmmm...

In fact... I think I'd be happy with my akai if had a better frequency range response...

Look again and think hard. Laughing

Quote:
30 Hz to 22'000 Hz ± 2/-3 dB
50 Hz to 18'000 Hz ± 1.5 dB

In vintage hifi speak this meant that the deck had a "flat" frequency response at 50 Hz to 18'000 Hz . Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing
And not so flat when exending the band to 30 Hz to 22'000.

Did you clean and degauss the heads on the Akai?

BTW, why not try to find a Studer A80 configurated in a reasonably sensible way.

Oh! ok... it gives an idea of what the response curve would look like... really wasn't clear to me.

So I'm losing something considerable starting around 40hz... hm. If my test were reliable, that doesn't make it much better than my Akai... really. I may be completely wrong though.

I only cleaned the heads on the Akai.

I just found two other decks that are apparently in excellent shape. A Tascam 32 for 375$ with new heads (barely used he says), and the other one is a Revox B77 MkII (I yet have to talk to him, says in the ad he only used it for a month). And they're within 30 minute drives from my place. I don't like the idea of getting one off ebay...

I think I'll forget about the a810, it scares me Still... those heads were sooo filthy... I'll keep wondering if that was the only problem. And I'll go have looks at those other two. The Tascam looks flimsy...compared to the revox
Quote:

The Mk2 version has a varispeed control ± 33%

nice... that's one thing I want pretty bad. I don't see a pitch knob though. Dunno if it's a quarter or half-track...

I'll be patient... I'll catch a big fish only if I let the small ones go.

I still own a Tascam 32, although it's been in storage for quite a while now. They aren't flimsy at all, it's a rather good deck. I used mine for tape editing and mixdowns.

Just found a Tascam 22-2 for dirt cheap too... apparently a very honest lil' deck.

Time to work now... freakin routine is killing me.

22-2 isn't a bad deck but it's not a 32.

I'm getting the B77 MKII.

It's from the original owner... a rich guy that always bought the expensive stuff. It's mint. With the original everything... dustcover and all Very Happy .

I'm giving him a good chunk of money...450$. But it's new. I figure that's my best bet.

It should be here in a few hours... if he doesn't get lost on the way!

My friend has 3x Revox 99 MKII stereo decks. Each has chan 1 dead, so it's difficult to figure out whether a play head or record head is shot. Any good sites, part sources, or other available on these machines? Are they even worth restoring?

If nothing else, they will end up in an art installation, or maybe a multi-deck looper.

They can well be used for tracking still.

That's eerie man. Tell him not to get four more 'cause if they all do that, we're all doomed.

It is brand new. Very Happy Not even a little wear on the transport buttons!

But... the counter doesn't work... just noticed. Bummer. No big deal. I'm getting it relubed and everything next week for sure.

A first test... and it's impressive.

I have a drill though.

Thanks. We do have several service manuals (all in very good condition), which include the schematics. But heads, and replacing them, now that's a different story.

The counter is usually driven by a little rubber belt. Those things get old and crack, especially if not exercised. When you have it serviced, this is one of the things they'll find.

Yeah... that's what I figured.
I just read in the documents (he had the service manual too... he forgot the dust cover though...) that it must not be lubricated.... that it's lubed for "life". Anyway, aside from cleaning and degaussing, I'm not touching anything. Will find an old tech that knows them well.
