Hi
In the last week I built an Atari Punk Console and a WSG, both projects went successfully and I am eager to begin soaking up more sound DIY info. Can anyone point me in the direction of something that might not be too much harder, but will start teaching me more about things like filters, using capacitors to control attack and decay, volt/octave CV and primitive sequencing or gating techniques? I am starting to feel like i should have started this ages ago. I am 31 and have been buying synths for years but now feel, wow, I can make things!!!

thanks

dan

The soundlab seems to be the next step for lots of folks. It was the first thing I made, with another 2 shortly thereafter. BUT I would suggest doing one more WSG with some of Scott Stites mods. I did a few with the extra oscillator, vactrols, and something else (egads cant put my finger on it). Takes the already cool WSG into true insanity, it becomes much more of a performance ready instrument. At least for how I like to perform...

After that jump on the slippery modular slope with everyone else!!

now when you mention modular building, god where do you start? i like the idea of doing it myself but i dont know what kind of style is easiest and most DIY (MOTM, frac rack, etc) is there one kind that is more open to making your own cases, etc. or is jumping into modular territory pretty much accepting that you have to start buying kits?

can you do modular building on strip boards?

i definitely want to make something that i can play with a keyboard or at least convert midi to cv.

thanks

Just the opposite. Building your own modules means you have complete freedom to use kits or not, to use boards from other people or to build from scratch, to put all your modules behind a big single panel or use detachable units -- anything you want. Almost all of my system is built on perfboard. Just space the parts out and wire them together. Way faster than designing a board, for one-off modules.
