If I'd make a string chorus PCB, what kind of multi-BBD circuit would you prefer?
Solina style (also: Crumar Performer, Böhm Phasing Rotor, and others)

ARP Omni style

Elka Synthex 4 BBD circuit

I would want neither - it's old fashioned and overused, and if I need it, there are digital FX boxes

That's good to hear. I really think it's not such a rare chip at all. It was popular in Germany among DIYers, but hasn't been used in that many commercial devices. (Yes, it's in the TAM-19.)
I suspect there must be thousands of these scattered over shops around the world.
The good availability was why I chose that chip in the first place. I just got worried as my #1 source, Reichelt, has dried up on these.

Thanks for showing interest - to you and to all the others who did.
I think this PCB will definitely be made, and I'll post an email order form in a few days, just as I did with the Tau.
You all just make sure to get these BBD chips Smile

Shocked

You're very close to the original, congrats !!!

Since I only knew conventional pad sounds, this one is great surprise.
I like it very much. Cool

Thanks!
I'm still unsure if the first sample (with just strings) is too lush for a true Solina emulation. But the last sample (adjusting the waveform) shows what span of sounds is possible, and I think there's a spot where it sounds like solina.
http://www.jhaible.heim.at/triple_chorus/jh_string_ensemble_demo_waveform_adjust_r8b.mp3
(To my ears it sounds just right at about 8 ... 10 seconds into this sample.)

BTW, that waveform adjustment was intended to be just a 100k trimpot. But I'll probably bring it out as a normal 100k lin pot to the frontpanel, to allow more variation than to just have "the" solina sound.

Man, that thing sounds nice! I have to think hard how many boards I will eventually buy...two is the minimum as I got chips to populate only two at the moment.
I've almost reached the roof of this months diy budget, so if there's no hurry with payment, I will take 5 boards!
Once again, thanks Jurgen!

Jurgen,

Hope you are feeling better from the hospital stay, (apparently you are, if you’re back at this so soon).
If I may offer a suggestion; when attempting to tune the chorus phaser to the Solina’s calibrated (or sweet spot) setting, you may want to consider the raw signal you’re feeding into the unit. Even if you have the most accurate chorus settings for authentic Solina, it may be harder to tell by ear, as the OB-8 (like most classic poly synths, ala P5, MM, etc.) have a more wideband osc signal than the typical raw string synth wave. The Solina/SE/Omni series have a pre-chorus string voice thats more
band-limited than those classic poly synths.
The string voices (on most of those old machines) have a distinct high-pass (and some lowpass) cut on them that is a major factor them their initial character.
I believe, if you tune the chorus using a synth such as the Yamaha CS, the additional highpass filtering would make it easier to model the Solina’s initial string voice character.
Once you’ve locked in on the settings you want to use for the classic Solina sound, you could use the OB and larger bandwidth synths to check for optimal headroom.
Just my .02. Sounds good so far.

Regards,

Lawrence

Anyone in australia thinking of this project? I may be able to help with a small combined order of TDA1022's
Probably around $12au each which is a little bit more than suppliers OS but postage etc would be a decent save on the final cost as they are in australia.
If anyone is interested let me know by tomorrow as i'll be ordering then.

Cheers
Brett
