Hi,

For everybody interested, on http://synth.lunelios.com is the software of a free NordLead3 patch randomizer download able. Such a tool is good for many hours of experimenting joy. Besides this using it is a good way to understand your synth, specially how it behaves and what causes its sound.

The NordLead3, Clavia states it's the best they ever made, is in a way special: it is able to create the sounds of the early electronic studio's. My wife always says she can hear the vacuum tubes Smile

After randomizing the parameters and sending these to the synth, mostly a complete unusable sound, if any, will be under the keyboard. A lot of tweaking has to be done to obtain something which has any musical meaning.

First one has to check the filter(s), who can be closed to the frequencies the synth produces at that moment. Also the 'amount' parameters of the LFO section has to be turned down. Oscillator Modulation can be a 'too much' parameter. After a while tweaking the other knobs and specially fine tuning them, a musical sound coulds be the result...

Attached are some 'cleaned' random patches and how they sound.

The randomizer also creates Morphes. Normally it's the best to disable these functions, but leaving it enabled can really produce some pure random sounds, controllable by the keyboard.

It's very interesting to explore the patches how they react to the keyboard, velocity, after touch and modulation wheel. To use these patches in music one has to learn how to play them. Making clusters, playing fast notes and the above mentioned controllers open up the possibilities.

A strange thing is happening...
After a while some patches don't stop anymore. They are just noodling around. No parameter effects them anymore, only the synths main volume can silent these. At the other hand: they are still evolving. (BTW even the 'panic' button doesn't work)

I produced a 6:30 during improvisation using three patches in the NordLead3. All parameters are morphed at random. In two of the three patches after touch is controlling the oscillator pitch, in my opinion a rather dull effect, but I didn't want to change it. The 'hi-onk' like sounds are the result of a heavy release velocity, which the NordLead3 doesn't have, I thought... Well, could be the pitch! At about 3:10 a nasty, loud sound is triggered, which couldn't be masked by other actions. After a lot playing of the heavy, hard sound, it suddenly disappears.

In the beginning and also in other parts one can hear the 'tube' like sound of the NordLead3. Also no effects are used, just the synth.

And yes, this is music too Smile

I think it's a really nice piece Wout !

I'd have preferred a little bit less dynamics in volume for a noodle, but I really like it.

Yes, but in fact it isn't a noodle, although the synth starts to noodle. I don't know why and to tell the truth, I don't care. The NordLead3 just does it

About the last sample of the 'cleaned' patches, I got the same sound by random using the NordLead2. Sysex and sound in the attachments. In this case I used a special patch in the G2X to clean the randomness using the Mutator, which gives one the possibility to make choises in a simple way.
