I can't decide on whether to wait and get the stereo forward compressor or just get a mono one. I'd really like to use it to process stereo signals from my computer, but also want to run some mono signals (mono synth, guitar, mic) I should know this, but could you just use one side of the stereo forward compressor to process a mono signal?

There shouldn't be any reason why you couldn't use a mono signal in it. It probably sums the L/R channels to determine the amount of compression anyway. Worse comes to worse, you send the same signal into both inputs.
