Hi Ya'll, I am looking for a relatively barebones VCA. Small circuits are best as I want to fir a LOT of them in a small space. I have 2 MFOS double VCA boards populated but they are too big to fit into my current layouts. This seems to be the case with all the MFOS boards, too big for my panels, I think I will likely build an MFOS only suitcase...

Anyhow, can anyone vouch for Rene Schmitz' VCAs?? #2 looks very simple and would condense quite nicely.

Um yeh, I seem to have overlooked the VCA for the 21st century... DUH!!!

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, but this one seems to fit the bill nicely.

The 21st Century VCA is also a filter, which you may or may not want.

You might try Thomas Henrys VCA-1, details at Scott Stites site. I just got parts to build a pair of them myself.

I will have to investigate it a little further when I get home. I was under the inpression that the VCF and VCA were separate circuits,hmmm... are they truly dependent on each other or just sharing components.

You have to order the book from Magic Smoke...well worth it. Tons of sweet looking stuff inside.

I always forget that I want to build individual parts of the soundlab, mostly I want a bank of the AR generators. I love to use them as assymetrical LFOs.

Hi,

Jorgen's VCA shootout has several designs compared and the simple ones fared pretty favorably. The 13600 versions are begging to be made as dual units. Have a look here: http://hem.bredband.net/bersyn/vca.htm

The SSM2164 is hard to beat if you can use exponential response VCA's. Charlie Lamm's dual PCB layout using Mike Irwin's linear mod gives log/lin responses at the expense of only two VCA's per 2164. Phillip Gallo shows both the expo and linear versions in his extensive writeup on the 2164. (The 2164 has a couple quirks to be dealt with even as an expo VCA. Both the Lamm and Gallo circuits and wrioteups explain and illustrate these needed "fixes".)

Rene's VCA3 is a great little VCA. I believe Ken Stone has a version of it available on PCB too?

Don't forget balanced modulators as VCA's. Trading the cost a 4 quad multiplier chip for a lot of components can let you fit many VCA's in a small space. And you have their "ring" mod capability available as a bonus!

Kind regards,

Randal

I have never been disappointed with a single circuit of Rene's. That guy is one of the greats, IMO.

Come to think of it, the last several Klee samples I've posted were made up of voices largely using his stuff - his version of JH's 2040 filter, VCO3, and the Late MS-20 Filter Clone.

VCA for the 21st century would be a great choice!

I built two VCA-1's, and they work great. Very simple to build too! I highly recommend it.
