hello,

i was given an old ibook running mac os9.2.2.

i want to use it for editing g1 patches and some midi sequencing. logic 5.5.0 runs well, even with the onboard sound mac av.

i tried to install some newer plugins like zebralette (smaller version of uhe's zebra) but it does not seem to work under os9. also i was hoping there would be a classic version of 'm' but found only M 2.6 which requires os x too?

also are there similar apps to 'total commander' (norton commander clone), metapad or cuecards for os9? are there some must have applications? is there an icon/symbol collection?

what about upping ram to 512+128 mb and adding an external hd via firewire 400?

any advice greatly appreciated,
best regards

hello eike!

You have to remember that OS9 is a completely different OS to Mac OS X. Anything which is built for Mac OS X will not run under OS 9 or previous. Also OS X is based on Unix, whereas OS 9 isn't.

However there are plenty of plug-ins that will run under OS 9. Also I highly recommend upping the RAM. You can even swap your hard drive for a faster one- but make sure that the internal HD buss is IDE and not SCSI. If it's SCSI, you will have to find one of those (but I don't think it will be). Remember, the faster your HD, the more tracks logic will squeeze. If you have FW, then yes, take advantage of it. Remember you can also use an external screen with it. All Macs had this ability.

You should also be able to run OS X on it too (I wouldn't go above 10.3.9 though) but if I were you I'd stick with OS 9.2.2

FWIW, Supercollider and Max/MSP were written for OS 9 and both work exceedingly well (but I'd forget Reaktor though, as it was always a PC app around the OS 9 days- it works, but is buggy as hell and is a resource hog).

I hope that helps Smile

You also have to get away from your PC mindset! Laughing

I've never heard of any of these apps- or equivelents for the Mac. I wouldn't know why any of these would have to be written for Mac. Perhaps Elektro will know??

I agree, putting OS X on that particular model is not smart. OS 9 will however run really well. If you simply stick by 9.2.2 and use stuff like Logic and DP you will do just fine.

I think the drive is a 4200 rpm unit? It will run better with 5400 but I think the bus has some restrictions so there is no need for going to far. RAM is basically it I think, but some of these were capped at less than a gig. You can probably check this using the MacTracker application which has data for all macs.

My bad.. http://www.mactracker.ca/

It seems like MacTracker only runs on OS X these days.
Your model can be found in there though.

v-un-v, stein,

thanks for replying so quickly! Very Happy

i read through some older threads which mentioned interesting software one should try, e.g. an older version of supercollider.

also, i have ordered an airport w-lan card and 512 mb of ram for a total of 640 mb.

i would like to leave the internal 20 gb drive as is but add an external firewire drive. so far i only found one which explicitly states to work with os 9 namely: lacie's 'little big disk' 320 gb. do you know of any others?

regarding the finder in os 9: where can i define the appearance for all folders (list). and is there a way to have only one finder window open, not one for each drive/folder?

best regards

eike

is the airport card an actual Apple one? Because you may have problems getting a driver to work with it.

Orangeware are a company who do make drivers, but it's limited to the Atheros (?) chip set and of course will only work in OS X

You may have to settle with an ethernet based connection (which is still very good)

I seem to remember that it is highly likely that 640 megs of internal memory in that particular model might be max anyways.

AFAIK most LaCie drives work ok with OS9, but you will have to format the drive from OS9. There might be an issue with large volumes but say 80 gigs or 120gigs should be just fine. Keep in mind that we are talking FW400 here and the bus in the iBook is not fast.

It is highly likely that the wireless card is an Apple branded one and that means it is rated to B speed.

640 mb is max for my ibook.

accessing the internet with ie 5.1 lan worked fine. the airport card is an original one, so it should work.

yeah, the internal 20 gb drive is fine. it would be nice to have for exchanging data between pcs (to mobile phone) and the ibook. Rolling Eyes
the largest lacie drive said to work with os 9 holds 320 gb. Shocked

Might be, time warp exists with older Mac apps. Check your local frequency settings and such.
