New G5s - soon! Very soon.. and dual 3 Ghz models too.
|Despite a new wave of PowerMac speculation, new G5s still appear to be six weeks away - at WWDC.
Over the past week, rumormongers from all corners of the Mac community have re-hashed G5 speculation across nearly the entire spectrum.
These speculations offer little new of note other than a persistent hope that new PowerMacs might be announced this month, or otherwise significantly sooner than the end of June at WWDC -- more than six weeks hence.
We'd like to put these rumors to rest; from all that we've heard, the delays in PowerPC 970FX production have forced Apple to group together both the 970FX (2.0-2.6GHz, later possibly 2.8GHz) and 975 (3GHz) updates.
Because the POWER5-based PowerPC 975 hasn't experienced the same ramp-up problems as the 970FX and some of IBM's other 90-nanometer chips (yet), it is still on schedule to deliver first silicon at approximately 3GHz by September.
In order to prevent sales problems with 970FX models due to the superior features (cooler operating temperatures for example, which will probably mean significantly quieter operation) and performance of the 975, Apple could reasonably choose not to announce its 3GHz model until September, but for the time being we are led to believe by reliable sources that the 975 model(s) will be announced right alongside the 970FX models at WWDC.
In short -- until considerably better recon becomes available on the specifics of 970FX/975 production ramp-ups, we are sticking to our projections of new PowerMacs at WWDC and no sooner. The 2.2 and 2.6GHz models will most likely be available right away, with the 3GHz version shipping in early to mid September.
