+/-12 supply Subject description: powering sub commander guitar synth without mains. |
|
|
Hi, I'm about to embark on building the sub commander guitar synth from MFOS but I'm still yet unsure how I'm going to power it. I haven't ventured outside of 9DV adapters and the trusty PP3 in the past. I was hoping someone may be able to give me some advice. I do not want to use mains. I've looked into possibly using two 9v PP3 and charge pumps. To be honest though I'm not really familiar with voltage regulators and charge pumps. That leads me onto if anyone knows the current consumption of the project that'd be great because I wouldn't want to use batteries if they only last 5 minutes.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks. |

Hi Demonstar
I've got no idea what the power consumption is on that circuit...but if you REALLY don't want to use the mains...
I suppose you could put two 9 volt batteries in series for each side of the supply, and use 7812 and 7912 voltage regulators. I don't know what battery life would be, but it's a fairly simple solution.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_battery_sizes#Table_of_modern_battery_sizes
The MFOS page lists the Approx. Current Consumption as +12V 32mA, -12V 30mA. Assuming carbon-zinc 9V batteries are actually capable of 400mAh, which I doubt , four of them (for +/-18V regulated down to +/-12,) should last 13hrs. The circuits' performance will probably degrade long before that, though.
Alkaline (565mAh,) and Lithium (1200mAh [really?]) should last correspondingly longer. _________________ Revenge is a dish best served with a fork... to the eye |

Thanks everybody! I got in touch with Ray Wilson and he said that two PP3's hooked up for +/-9V should work fine so i'm gona' give that a shot. I'll use rechargeable ones I think since I won't get much battery life from the batteries.
Since I emailled him he also added current consumption to his page. |

I used one of these:

I was working in an extremely tiny case (never doing that again), so I needed something more compact. 24VDC Wallwart adapter goes into a regular DC jack, which goes into the above board, and then into the Subcommander board. Seems to work great (if you don't try to build it into a tiny box.)
I'll post pictures of mine soon, finally got it finished last week. |

looks like its a switching power supply alot people say their not good for the sound but are you having any trouble with it. make me wish i ordered one with my last futurlec order 9.90 seems like a good price and im sick of buying 9v for my soundlab _________________ mY MusIc

I'm not experienced enough with this stuff yet to know what is "best" -- but the unit works fine with the Futurlec board. There have been some hum/noise problems, but they were fixed by resolving some grounding issues. I haven't tested it with a different power supply yet, but may do that soon. I just built Ray Wilson's +/- 12V supply on a home-etched board to power the analog outs of my Midibox Sequencer (www.midibox.org)... I'll test the Guitar Synth out with that and let you know what the results are. |
