Here is a DX7 style FM electric piano patch. It is taken almost exactly from one of the DX7 factory ROM sounds. I think it sounds better (cleaner, with more dynamics) than the original. I haven't done much work translating FM patches because of the impending(?) dx operator modules.
Although FM is no longer the king of realistic, acoustic synthesis, it is capable of a wealth of great sounds (cliché's excepted). It's great to have the technology available and not constrained to that horrible DX7 UI.

Great piano! I have a problem with it, though. I hear inconsistent keyclicks over my headphones (also when I plug into my engine directly) when I play this patch. Is it me, my engine or does this patch just do it (it is not *very* loud but clearly audible.

The variation in the clicks is caused by the oscillators running at a random phase with respect to the envelope start, so the sound may kick in at various momentary oscillator output signals.

There are two things you can try to do about it :

- Set the attacks a bit slower

- Sync all oscillators to the gate signal

Also the mixer that drives the output module in the poly section seems to overload, so turning down the levels on the inputs a bit will make it sound a little cleaner.

tip from Rob Hordijk :

In the FX section set fx or bus input to -6dB and the output to +6dB to give a little extra headroom for FX processing.

Thanks Howard & Jan

I should repost some of my old old stuff with little glitches Embarassed

Of the 2 'click busting' techniques mentioned, sync to keyboard gate works most effectively but costs some more DSP (connecting anything to the sync input bumps up that oscillator's load).

The clicks add something raw and edgey to the sound. I don' think there is anything wrong with this patch. I think Fozzie was just trying to understand it.
