On another electro-music.com forum a question came up about posting mp3 files of music that may be copyrighted by a third party, in this case a commercial music group presumed to be published commercially, and under contract with a record company.

Please do not post music or images unless you own the copyright for them, have been given the rights to distribute them, or know that they are in the public domain.

Most of the music posted here is provided by the artists themselves. It is assumed that they implicitly own the copyright to their own music. It is suggested that musicians indicate the copyright ownership and date when posting their music.

Please check the "Conditions of Use" page for our site: http://electro-music.com/catalog/conditions.php

If you have questions, comments, concerns, or complaints, post them as replies to this topic.

I guess this should extend to great care when posting remixes of other artists work. The way the RIAA is handling matters these days, there is no such thing as fair use when it comes to copyrighted music.

Suggestion: Could there be a button for adding a standard copyright notice to files we upload? The "profile" could be used to add the full artist name? I mean.. a new field in the Profile used for entereing the full artist name.. else the nick would be used and that one is not always that informative.

I guess that could be done, but I have a lot of other things on my plate. If someone who is PHP literate wants to take a shot at it, I'll work with them. It's not as simple as automatically adding a copyright notice. What happens when you post something that is in the public domain, or something copyrighted by someone else who gave you permission to use it?

I suggest just make sure that wherever you post your music, put in a copyright notice. If you post it here as an attachment, put the copyright notice in the comment. The comment stays with the attachment in our database. Also, whenever you create an MP3 file, put the copyright in the header somewhere. The free version of Winamp has a good facility for editing mp3 file headers, BTW.

This won't stop people stealing your music, but it will at least be a verifiable theft.

I was more thining about a "helpful" button which could add a copyright statement to the posted file if the poster wanted to.. and he could also edit the text by hand of course.. or just ignore the thingie. But perhaps we could have a page here somehwre.. a static one or something which could be used for grabbing various types of copyright notices.. copy and paste?

But yes.. the copyright notice should go into the file too..
Most MP3 encoders/players have extensive editing capabilities of the info tags. Winamp, iTunes..

Even a simple blrub that could be cut & pasted from the bottom of the page. At least all legality would be concise, and each person's wording wouldn't be taken for granted.
