How about a Glossary ?? |
|
|
It seems there have been request for a glossary within this subforum over the past couple of days. As we all know, this area of electronics if FILLED with specialized LINGO and can be a daunting task in trying to keep up with some of the threads here. What do you guys think?

I got some associations, but indeed I went through the posts and most came from there. It's not too shocking I thought, but still a lot of work to make it.
I'll post a new version with some extra cryptics added.
BTW, if you want you can edit the title of your first post, it has a speling issue indeed. _________________ Jan

Thinking the same thing Jan. This is too informal. This was really a question if it was a good idea to have a glossary and not intended to be the actual list. I made this topic sticky but would really like to see a more formal single list of terms. This "real" glossary will be the sticky topic.
I would of course help with it ..........

Actually they don't make any processors at all, they sell the intellectual property for their processor architecture. The MIPS is then embedded into larger SOC IC's. "SOC = System On Chip". Right now the cable modem industry is one of the biggest users of this architecture. The latest venture is the MIPS technology using in Microchips 32 bit MCU's .......

Yeah, it is. Maybe we could have a specialized version of Search? Or maybe it's time for an electro-music Wiki that those who are knowledgeable could add to -- hopefully without getting overly verbose
CPLD Complex Programmable Logic
VHDL Very (High-Speed Integrated Circuits) Hardware Description Language
OSC OpenSound Control
a communication protocol which allows musical instruments (especially electronic musical instruments such as synthesizers), computers, and other multimedia devices to share music performance data in realtime over a network.
...but I suppose anyone could go to Wikipedia, like I did. _________________ Revenge is a dish best served with a fork... to the eye |

Please do, I think it's a great idea for this function.
I was thinking just this thought as the list started to get longer and then began to fragment. Wiki would relieve the responsibility of update from just one person. |

I like the idea of linking the Wikipedia definitions right in the glossary post But yes, one or two persons would then need to keep updating it. That might be an unfair burden How much work would it be to start a electro-music Wiki ??

We've been discussing the Wiki thing in the past, that was a bit troublesome then.
I like the idea of having links, but it would be good to have a short description as well.
If we would have a text file like :
Code: |
Rabbit {A type of micro controller}
SDRAM {}
SMT {Surface Mount Technology}
SOC {System On Chip}
SPI {Serial Peripheral Interface}
SRAM {Static RAM}
SVF {State Variabl Filter}
SPARTAN {A type of FPGA made by Xilinx. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spartan_%28FPGA%29]}
State machine {A formal abstraction for describing the workings of some process or machinery.}
TTL {Transistor Transtor Logic}
TriCore {}
UART {Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter}
USB {Universal Serial Bus}
VBA {Visual Basic for Applications}
|
I could probably make some PHP code to generate a web page from it, that web page could be shown in an IFrame in the glossary page, it would not matter where the text file, the PHP code or the generated HTML would be, so I could run that at home. We then would need some extra stuff to be able to GET and PUT the text file, with a simple checkout counter ... might manage that in a weekend ... or two ...
