in a nutshell, 3 oscillators, 2 ring modulators, resonant filter, ldr control of osc 1 pitch and power starve and lots of bend contacts for connecting bits to each other

this is the first version with a filter, it's great, can sound almost buchla'ish

the power starve and contacts are great for adding lots of chaos Smile

I tried a demo once. I wasn't that impressed, but that could be because this is my degreed profession and I already know how to master without all-in-one-box tools. I remember thinking that it's good for what it is, though. Smile

PostPosted: Sat Feb 18, 2012 4:32 pm    Post subject: Gear that we are replacing Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Greetings, this seems to be a popular thread.
Along with gear we want or just got... there is the question of Replacing Gear. Hmm.... when to replace, why, and what to replace it with.

A year ago I bought a Korg MicroSampler. It seemed to be a great way to incorporate my Nature sound loops into a performance. Well I soon became disappointed. Main problem, this gadget did not have enough memory for the kind of samples /loops I wanted to store. I spose it would be adequate if all the samples were little boops, bleeps & hits, kind of like for a rap performance or something.

But some things about this device were really cool...notably the fact that you could set it on "keyboard" and play your sample at varying pitches. Of course it could not tempo shift, so your lower notes would be slowed down etc.

Definitely when I bought a MIDI controller & set about learning to use Ableton, I realized that what I really needed to do was buy a laptop and bring Ableton to a performance. I could certainly access samples in an Ableton audio track.

I really tried with the Microsampler, but alas, the difficulty of transferring, modifying and storing samples just got too frustrating & I finally put it on Craigslist today.

Replacing it? I don't know of any sampler that would do what I want, which is really "Loop capture/storage/trigger". Ableton has them all beat!

I did say that if someone had a Kaoss KP3 or Kaoss Quad to trade, I'd be interested. Ableton has effects, but I think it's nice to have extra hardware & ways to access sounds... don't want to be completely dependent on Ableton.

Laura, it is good to hear that you are back on the scene again with Abelton. I might also suggest ChucK if you program for this purpose. I recently rediscovered your "Insect Summer of Love" album in my iTunes collection and find it to be quite relaxing on a quiet evening. What are you planning to do, sample the insects and play tunes with them? that would be very interesting!

Les

Hi Les,
I just saw this message after leaving the chat.

Thanks! I never really left the scene...last Sept I played at electro-music fest with my son Aaron, "Genetique", (a great musician who teaches me stuff & answers my questions).

But I am keeping busy with learning new gear all the time.

>I might also suggest ChucK if you program for this purpose.

Gosh, I don't program--I have enough problem learning to 'play' in the regular way Smile

> I recently rediscovered your "Insect Summer of Love" album in my iTunes collection and find it to be quite relaxing on a quiet evening.

great--that was my purpose in recording them! I used to think the insect sounds were so relaxing that they could be used in therapy & meditation. It would be great for people in hospitals who couldn't open the windows and hear the natural world.

> What are you planning to do, sample the insects and play tunes with them? that would be very interesting!

hahah.... that was what I wanted to do in 05, before I had even heard of DAWs, MIDI, synths etc.

Since then I graduated to other things, but I would still like to use the nature sounds loops as part of a composition. Throw some effects on them, make them sound like aliens etc.

$1400?? More expensive than Ableton, Laptop and MIDI controller all together!!!!!

let's face it, the computer has just outdone most of the hardware gadgets for what you can do w/it. Unless it crashes, of course....

Lots of people are moving from ableton to the octatrack at the moment, there must be a reason for that?

Laughing

I still like hardware gadgets though & would never get rid of my Xstation or Electribe.

I've just finished a jam session with a friend, using mainly Octatrack and Ableton Live (he used mainly Live). The Octatrack is an awesome machine, and fits your (Laura) requirements, but when budget is an issue I would definitely say that Ableton can cover most of what the Octatrack does, but not the other way round.

Laura: Another possibility for loops is either an iPad or iPod Touch running ProLoop,NanoStudio,or BeatMaker, and there's probably a few other apps as well. It's less expensive and also has a variety of other uses.

while we're talking laptops... what kind of specs would folks recommend to run Ableton, MIDI controllers, VSTs etc?

My desktop computer has 2.66 Ghz, core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM. PC, windows 7.

I'm thinking a music laptop should have at least an i-3, maybe an i-5 processor. Speed--faster than 2.66? What kind of prices we talking?

I would go with more RAM,8 gigs if you can,and yes on the i5.But definitely stuff as much RAM into it as you can,but do it after the fact if you or someone you know is comfortable with doing it (it's not hard)
The reason for this is you usually get gouged ordering it that way from the vendor.
I just bumped my Macbook Pro up to 8 gigs for $50
The price from the Apple store?
$400
And that's still with me installing it!
