Andy has the worst luck in the world with products... or he has extremely high standards.

I have a friend who is like Andy, in that she needs only touch something and it will break within minutes. Just the slightest tap... I've seem powered mixers, amps, synths, etc. all suddenly malfunction after her slightest touch.

My Nechville Universal Meteor arrived yesterday, thanks to a research grant from Kutztown University. Mosc has one of these that I played first in 2005, thereby leading into this whole electro-acoustic business. Blame it on Mosc (Thanks, Howard Smile )

I plan to revive this line of research and to integrate banjo-driven conducting into the computer music + visuals stuff I have been doing with my students.

I had meant to post a short audio sample, but I had the recorder switched to the wrong input Embarassed Now it's time to go off to work.

It's rubbish.

Uneven lighting.

Variable velocity response on pads.

Half arsed software, can't even control all of the parameters in abletons own instruments! Can't browse samples or clips. Browsing own content is very hit and miss. Very buggy control of plugin parameters, the list goes on.

Nechville gave us a 30% educational discount. There's no "consumer market" for these, they are built on order with a 6-month build time, although they built mine in 4. Being a computer science professor has a lot of hours and nowhere near the pay of industry, but it has some benefits. I do like like the work and the students.

In fact I spent most of the weekend working, but I did sit down and capture a 5 minute sample with some simple reverb and ping-pong delays. I used only the 1/4" audio output on this, skipped the guitar synth and MIDI stuff here. Too tired and need to go to bed.

It has kind of an electric ukulele sound, due to the small, dampened head. I like it, it's way different from my acoustic banjos. Of course there will be lots of room for processing when I have more time.

Got this a few days ago, hope to use it for some of the ideas crawling around in my head, to get them out into the world instead.

I expected uneven lighting being powered by only USB. Didn't think of velocity though. Have you tried with a proper power supply?

Yep, the pads are actually worse when powered by the PSU.

I can live with the pad lighting but the backlit buttons are the worse problem, unless it is pitch dark you cant really read the text.

It isn't just me that is a bit disappointed with push, have a look at the forum: https://forum.ableton.com/viewforum.php?f=55&sid=d969416f5b9fc8cc98beb7d3ea79b2c0

I guess I'll hold out until Liine release their LiveControl2 for Lemur. I just haven't had solid enough performance from the network connections to really count on LiveControl in the past (it uses UDP over WiFi...BAD idea).

(I also have heard Stretta is going to use MIDI only for LiveControl2...less bandwidth, but definitely more stable, and using a cable instead of Wifi is a huge bonus. I wish Apple would just allow for a USB/Network connection on the damn thing, instead of needing to Jailbreak the iPad to get that feature).

ok...back to GAS...

Custom MIDI banjos usually don't go for $75

Looks cool, and I do plan to get an iPad soon. However, it lacks the main appeal of a controller like Push - pads which are (theoretically) velocity or pressure sensitive.

Fortunately, there are alternatives to Push like Livid's controllers and the QuNeo.

Lovely instrument! Congrats!

Thanks, also thanks to Andy.

I wasn't sure what I thought until I plugged it in. No high-pressure, ham-fingered playing for this. It's smooth as silk, or butter, or something. As soon as I heard the first electronic note in my headphones, I knew this was going to be a lot of fun Very Happy

Off to the deck, now, to play some acoustic banjo before the clouds turn into rain. Cool

Fishman TriplePlay.

First impressions:

1. Won't fit many of my guitars. The pickup it pretty wide and the mounting mechanism only gives you so much height. I found one guitar it would fit, my super crap JTV 59

2. Tracking is the best I have seen yet even with the pickup not mounted that well.

3. Very susceptible to any kind of fret buzz, I had to raise the strings on the guitar to get it going.

4.. Software is a pile of shite, crashes all the time, fails to scan plugins, requires force quitting quite a bit. Basically not finished.

I will post some updates when (if) I get it going properly.

A Waldorf Rocket followed me home from my walk today. Nice little gadget - I like the principle with limited controls, digital oscillators with some weird variations, and an analog filter.

I like the idea of it "following" you home Stefan. Like a little pup that wants to be 'loved'? Laughing

It'll be interesting to hear what you do with it. Smile

Looks great, Dale. I'm going to have to send mine back for repair, and then we can play a duet. Maybe at electro-music 2013.

It was sitting there all alone in a glass cabinet at the local music store. Not unloved though, the store owner was a bit grumpy when I bought it - "now I'll have to wait for ages before we get another one that I can play with!"

Fun sounds though for sure!

I love that idea, Howard. Will do Cool

When I first started plunking it without electronics, I had a moment of "strings strung over a coffee can" hesitation. When I plugged it into the laptop, all worries disappeared banana It fingers like silk or butter or something, and the notes from the 1/4" audio adapter are similarly silky. I haven't done much with the synth output jack yet, to tell you the truth, but I'll probably use that output to drive algorithms, anyway. I'm still somewhat of a purist in my own strange way Shocked

Also bought my own Bart Reiter tubaphone a couple days after this down near Philly, been watching for a Bart Reiter tubaphone for years. (Linda spots them on the net.) Up to 6 banjos now:

http://reiterbanjos.com/wlaydie.html

http://reiterbanjos.com/prof.html

http://reiterbanjos.com/tuba.html

http://www.ramseybanjos.com/Electric.html

http://www.deeringbanjos.com/vega-long-neck-banjo (I think this was still $2500 when I bought it around 2004or5 -- actually pretty good as an investment, I guess).

http://www.nechville.com/universalMeteor.php

Each one sounds different and feels different and I love playing them all. One of the happiest things to do in my life Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Take care.
