Hi all,

My PC has recently crahsed pretty hard, and I've been tempted to buy a mac for years. I'm looking at the iMacs currently, but was wondering if anyone has any opinions on direct recording with them. I use a tascam US-122 to record onto my PC, and from what I can tell the drivers are there for the MAC OS.

Does anyone have experience doing direct audio recordings on there? I know Garageband is the big one for recording live instruments, but hardware wise, any problems with mac?

The iMac will do fine. I haven´t used one myself, but basically it is a Mac with one internal hard drive. The rules are the same as for any one drive system out there. You must keep your disk reasonably clean. It is too easy to fill it up with pictures from your digicam, MP3s and what have you. If you intend to use a computer as a DAW, then you must consider what else you are using it for.

I dunno about that audio interface you have, but if the vendor provides OS 10.5.x compatible drivers then I´m sure it will work just fine.

Garageband is OK as a low end DAW. It´s main focus is as a host for a lot of sample/loop based virtual instruments but it can do live capture OK as well.

For almost nothing you can get the light version of Logic. This is a pretty serious DAW and the full version at 399 USD is awesome. Another alternative is Digital Performer ( MOTU ).

I use my girlfriends I-mac & also have a macbook pro.
If you get a good AD/DA converter with solid drivers, you can't go wrong !
