Ever since I started with this music hobby, I've been wanting to make a guitar talk just like Peter Frampton did with a talk-box. "Do you feel like I do?" is what he sang on a live recording I have. Well, now I've done it and a fairly good job of it too.

I Googled some sites on vocal tract modelling, mostly obtuse indecipherable information to me, but some of the sites dumbed it down enough for me to understand. What you have is your vocal chords creating sound and your vocal tract filtering it. The filter transfer function can be approximated by a band-pass filter at 500 Hz and another at 3000 Hz. Obviously it's way more complicated than that, but in an oversimplified world that's the story.

So I set ChucK up to read in a guitar wav file that I generated with Guitar Lab and route it through two parallel band-pass filters then to the DAC. To make the filters follow the microphone voice input, I do an FFT on the ADC and then do peak detection in the low and mid frequency ranges. Then each FFT interval I set the gain and frequency of the band pass filters to match the peaks found by the peak detector.

After a few hours of fine-tuning and experimenting, lo and behold it works pretty well. Besides wanting to do this for a long time, I plan to incorporate this talk box into the guitar effects software that I'll be writing soon. If you give it a try, let me know how you like it. Enjoy.
