sk1 aleatron |
|
|
Hello team,
I've been busy bending my sk1. I finished the paintjob and hardware mounting. Now I'm getting ready to do the soldering, but...
... I think the diagram I am using, which is the one in Ghazala's book, isn't correct. There's one connection in the 'image' switches which seems to be wrong and I found a corrected version somewhere!
Can anybody verify the diagram, the book one! And/or tell me what correction need to be made.
I hope this makes sense.. I will make scans of the diagrams if necessary, but right now I am at work.
ps. I am doing the SK1 aleatron according ghazala's design! I know things will work out if I change the design, but I would like to keep this one as "authentic" as possible!
thanks. _________________ http://husc-sound.com |

Here we go!
(The connection between the rightmost 'axis' switch and the leftmost 'image' switch is added, i don't really care about this one.)
What makes me hesitate is connection 7, which is now connected to the left leg of the fourth switch, instead of the right leg of the third switch... both these switches are marked with a grey dot.
I hope anybody can share some light on this, I need to get going after the weekend and I have no mo resources. _________________ http://husc-sound.com |

I've tried this diagram once on my sk-1.
It was really not good for me.
To much noizi and lots of crashes.
I experimented and found some sweet spots.
Try and retry.
Don't take this diagram for granted. Thats my advice.
Cheers,
Ivan |

Thanks!
But my goal was the aleatron version of the sk1 and now I need to know what difference the "switch correction" makes.. If it is an improvement and if anybody used it?
But thanks for the reply, my next sk1 is going to be total chaos, finding my own bends! The guideline by ghazala offered me a chance to train my aesthetics, painting!! Hardware placement and mounting and hopefully improve my soldering skills. So far it is a great experience. _________________ http://husc-sound.com |

Looks like an interesting bending, I didn't know until now with the SK-1.
I've gathered some data here. _________________ 0.618033988 |

Wow sam, that are some great modifications. I have the service manual and been looking at it for a while.. my technical know how on electronics is still too low to make proper modifications, but that's not my goal.
I am doing this version to really get to know the sk1, call it a prototype and will definitely build a patchbay version with some personal mods. When I'm finished with that, I'll have to go and get some more sk1's!!
ps. I am really enjoying the rest of your site.. there's some fascinating and inspiring stuff there! _________________ http://husc-sound.com |

Thanks for your kind words, Alexander.
Because of the interest on this circuits page I've updated it a bit.
A tip for playing the SK-1, apart from any bending :
Take preset 'piano' but enable also the 'portamento' function.
Now the situation is :
If you still press a key and press a second one, the tone is going 'glissando' from one to the other.
While playing the piano in the same setting, and you release the 1st key before hitting the second one,
there's no 'glide', just the new note will be played.
A property of finger-setting which can be used as a means of expression. _________________ 0.618033988 |

I finished it...
... it was a good three day work and cost me almost a 100 euros, but it was worth it..
..I really got better at soldering and learned a lot about how not to do things.
Now, it's time to learn from my mistakes .
+ & - 's :
+ It's still alive, I didn't destroy it!
- It doesn't function properly and doesn't function at all as an sk1.
- I think I destroyed a bit of the soundchip. All the regular voices are gone and it only makes sound if I put it in "chord" mode. Also the keyboard is rendered useless, because all I can do with it, is trigger drumbeats, which can then be altered with the various switches.
+ All of the modifications, except for 1 led, 1 switch and 1 pot seem to work.
+ It is now a completely random uncontrollable drum machine
- It is now a completely random uncontrollable drum machine..
samples and pictures will follow, but I am tired, happy and sick of it at the same time.. I need a movie and something else on my mind!

Correction!
It does function, almost normal. The only thing is, I need to set some of the bends before I turn it on.. Amazingly it still doesn't seem to be under my control, but now I am not only limited to beats!
Great stuff, although I'll need to write a whole new manual to play it right!

Tonight I took the SK1 to the workshop to let the participants look at it and work with it...
...when my 'friend' who went along spilled his coffee over it. Now he said not much coffee went on it, but most went next to it...
But coffee came dripping out of it when I held it upside down...
My stomach now really hurts for two reasons:
a/ He never said sorry or anything, but just laughed and made stupid remarks and that sucks if you're friends, because I can't just call him an asshole, but I think he is.
b/ I'm really worried that it won't work again...
I think I know what to do..
I left the batteries out, didn't connect it and didn't touch any of the knobs, I did have to take it home, so moved it around a lot and now it's a few inches next to my heater with a towel in between to prevent it from getting too hot. Just leaving it there to dry..
How long should I leave it like this before turning it on for the first time? Any other tips?
And can anybody tell me anything to comfort me, thank you!

Coffee with or without milk and or sugar?
When there is sugar or milk in it you might want to open it and clean it with water. Opening is the best to do anyway as you'll see when it dried up. _________________ Jan

You took the right measures I think. Removing the power and drying it next to a heater.
It could take one day. First check is, if any button gets stuck in the pressed position.
Opening the SK-1 is a dreadful job anyway with all the screws involved, so better test first if it's ok.
And this socalled friend is a blunt moron indeed. _________________ 0.618033988 |

Thanks!
I'm still leaving it, occupying m yself with other things... I just finished the damn thing, only played with it for a few nights, this is all so 'toevallig', but that's the irony of it all.
It stopped smelling like coffee now and there's no visible stains, so it's future is looking bright. I'll switch it on tomorrow.
Opening it up is not a great plan, because it is filled with extra wires and closing it was not easy, I taped a lot of the wire to the protective cardboard on top of the main pcb and if I open it up, I properly have to bend and move a lot of wire around and maybe break some connections.
If all fails I'll remove all three pcb's and replace them, I have another sk1 ready for these kind of emergencies.
Anyhoe, I'll post if it works tomorrow! _________________ http://husc-sound.com |

That is such good news!
I stumbled accross a cousin of it at the flea market last weekend, an SK-10. Got it for 50 cents! and it works. Off to the bend it soon bin it goes!
Have fun with the new toy, and keep it away from those that do not appreciate its uniqueness. Bastages they are I say, bastages. |

Nice !
2 Danno Gee Ray
The SK-10 ? Still a sampler option ? Does it have those later added drumpads ?
By the way : the SK-1 has a 'hidden' sound. Because it's a combination in the matrix which is not being used.
It sounds like this. _________________ 0.618033988 |

No the SK-10 has no pads. It's actually a very slimmed down little brother of the SK-1. Still a sampler, and fun to play with. |

I forgot to set an alarm and had a few beers the night after the workshop, iets te gezellig allemaal!
I guess I have enough to work on for now and the samples, which are really really good!
Some rare casios are on their way next week, and I got my hands and room full!
Post some pictures of your bends...
