I got a new computer the other day. It was a home-built computer so naturally it came with a few problems. My microphone jack only works if you plug in the cord "half-way", you know. And I broke the "line-in" input the other day (i was stepping on the mic and I turned the tower and heard a "snap"). It still works, but the plug moves around to the left and cuts out, yeah I'm pretty mad about that.

Anyways, if anyone knows somewhere I can look where to fix this that would be awesome. If you could tell me what that panel in the back with all the audio ports is called that would be great, too. Your help is always greatly appreciated,

From, Kyle

Kyle,

There are two possibilities here.

There is usually a card in the computer called the "soundcard" which has a MIC jack, a SPEAKER jack, and sometimes a LINE IN jack. There may also be a JOYSTICK port which can do double duty as a MIDI port with the right adapter cable. If the plugs / jacks you are referring to are away from the plugs / jacks where you plug in your mouse and keyboard, you may have a standalone or separate soundcard. If this is the case then the soundcard would need to be replaced.

Some computers have the soundcard functions built in to the motherboard of the computer itself. The motherboard is the main circuit board of the computer. If the plugs / jacks you are referring to are very near the other lacks and plugs where your mouse and keyboard and printer all plug in. then it is likely to be a built in soundcard that is a part of the motherboard. This would be unfortunate, as the only practical way to repair it would be to replace the motherboard itself (not always cheap).

Is there any way you could post a photo of the damaged area?

Yes, the mic and line in ports are connected to the part where you plug in the keyboard and mouse and such. I will post a photo tomorrow...Additionally there are Mic/line out ports on the front of my tower which I could connect if all else fails, that is if there is somewhere to connect them to, ha.

I got this compter at a pretty fair price it would be absurd to return it over this simple problem. It would wind up costing me 30 or so dollars to ship it anyways, so I've already ruled that out...

Stay with me with this one until I post a photo...it's very important to me!

Thanks G-Ray, from Kyle

From the amount of times the same post came through, I'm guessing you might have damaged your keyboard/mouse sockets too! Embarassed Laughing

It actually is quite possible to replace the SMD sockets they use for the sound connections. It does require good soldering skills and a bit of confidence, and a lot of care.

You could pretend it was like that when it turned up. Feels horrible doing this, but I did do something similar myself once. (There, I've fessed up! Begone damned spot!) It ends up being sent back as faulty, and in the meantime you might get a new board. It's actually lucky that it is on the motherboard, as these don't usually cost as much as most other components. AU$90-$130 is pretty common.

Sorry about the multiplied post. I'm click happy when pages don't load.

The microphone port was broken like that when it showed up. It would be no scam.

I don't know if you read above, uh I mentioned that there is a mic port in the front of the computer that is, unfortunately not connected. That would solve all of my problems, because I've never used the line in for anything and I only used it as an alternative to the crappy mic port.

Any of you ever hooked one of these up?

Thanks again
