G2 Engine Stopped Working Subject description: But thankfully it is working again now! |
 |

Hi, all
I just thought I'd post this to see if anybody could shed any light on things.
I had my synth rig working in my studio yesterday afternoon do a pre-practice for a band practice last night. Played the Nord G2 in a few songs.
BTW I'm currently doing a Pink Floyd Tribute band, and the G2 is perfect for the retro Moog/VCS3 sounds such as the "mournful" synth intro on "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"!
Anyway, I had a quick break and came back to do some more practice and suddenly found that the G2 was not working any more.
I didn't have time to look at it before having to pack up and get to the main practice which was a real downer. I got by in the main practice with some stock lead sounds in my Motif ES Rack, which I quickly programmed in for use by my keyboards, but it wasn't the same as with my lovely Nord
The only symptom of something out of the ordinary on the G2 was that the MIDI LED was FLASHING slowly. As I was a little less in a panic this morning, I realised that I had seen this when updating to OS 1.4, so I ran the OS updater this morning, and my Nord G2 engine is back in all her glory!
But I'm curious as to why it would have gotten into this mode in the first place, especially without any help! Has anybody else seen this before?
It's gotten me nervous of course about this happening whilst I'm at a gig where I can't do anything about it. So much so, that I'm seriously considering from now on taking a laptop with the Nord applications on (and I'm thinking about putting a computer in my rig so that I can use NI B4).
But with the lack of a G2 Vista driver then I need to make my laptop a dual boot system (or take Vista off and just have XP! ).
So are there any thoughts/previous experience on this problem? _________________ Regards

Hi Derek,
I have no idea, Jan is possibly your best bet. He will see this and may post with some Guru type info.
There is a vista driver, this was in beta and it looks like it will be released soon as the beta program is over.
Cheers

Yeah right ... I had read this before and was stumped as well ... only thing I can think of is that something crept into the little hole and managed to reach the secret update button ... oh wait that's for the engine only ... what has the manual to say about this .... store + performance ...
erm ... maybe someone pressed store + performance and then power cycled the synth?
Sorry that's all I can think of, otherwise it's a bug causing the synth to do this spontaneously, but it seems rare as it's the first time I heard of this.
See page 140 of the manual (pointing to a pdf at the Clavia site) _________________ Jan
also .. could someone please turn down the thermostat a bit.

And the Vista update looks pretty solid as well. |
Hey Derek, rather than a laptop how about a second G2 Engine? I had been considering an expansion but I guess it's not that much of a leap to another (pre-owned) G2E.
Re your fault, have you considered heat as a possible cause? I notice that G2E's do run quite hot (surprisingly so considering the _likely_ current requirements) and since I made a half-U space above and below the G2E in my rack the one or two very occasional lock-ups I used to get have gone away completely. Yours is, IIRC, in a well populated rack and with a warm venue....

Hi, Jim
Don't get me G.A.Sing!
A Laptop wit hthe G2 stuff on is still my route, because I realised I don't really have any "disaster recovery" for any of my synths if patches went AWOL, so a laptop with my x.factory librarians, MIDIOX and the G2 stuff is what I'm setting up.
I have noticed as well that the G2 engine runs hot, and like you, I intend to make some extra space in the rack above and below it as a precaution. Maybe even some forced air cooling as well. _________________ Regards

hello dereck,
i had this 2 times before. press the on/off button of your g2 about 40 times. as this doesn't work, remove the g2usb driver from your system dir. (copy it first to your desktop). power up your g2, find new hardware. |
