RSS Feeds |

Hi,
Is there a way of getting the RSS feed to feed the last posted message rather than the first one in the thread?

As long as were making RSS feed feature requests, a thing that I've always wanted in the RSS feeds is which sub-forum it's from.

What Howard wrote here suggest that the last topics are returned ... but erm .. I can't say anything sensible about the subject unfortunately. _________________ Jan

Hi Jan,
I get the Thread title and an UPDATED date and the contents are always the first post in the thread.
Cheers

I just noticed this thread. Been busy here and haven't been able to keep up as much as I'd like.
I will look into hacking the rss.php code to do these things. Thanks for the feedback _________________ --Howard

I made an adjustment to the rss feed program to jump to the last post instead of the first. It wasn't too hard to do, but since I didn't write the program in the first place, I'm not sure I didn't mess up anything in the process.
Please, rss users, give this a try.
http://electro-music.com/forum/rssx.php
Once I hear that it's ok, I'll replace the existing rss.php with this one.
Thanks... _________________ --Howard

Thanks, Chris. Doesn't work on my iPHone either. I can use that to test it. After I figure this out, I'll post an update to this topic. Andy, any luck with your reader. It seems to work fine here with the Mozilla reader.
As for the request to include the sub forum, I'll try to figure a way to do that, but if the reader doesn't print the fields, there isn't much I can do. Maybe the forum trail (Discussion >> Schmooze) could be put in the front of the text.
Any suggestions? _________________ --Howard

This was a bit of a pain to test because the feeds are cached to prevent too much load on the server. So having a test version and a production version is a bit confusing since they write to the same cache.
Anyhow, I tested this with Firefox, Safari, and the iPhone. Seems to work so I replaced the standard rss.php
If anyone finds any problems, please let me know. _________________ --Howard

Thanks Mosc, it works for me, now.
As far as leaving "bread crumbs" for which forum a post came from, what do you mean when you say "if the reader doesn't print the fields"? Are you suggesting that they are already being sent, and that my RSS reader isn't showing them? If so, I'll try and figure out what I need to do with my RSS reader. If I misunderstood you, sorry for the noise.

Well, the feeds are coded in xml, each topic is one item. The rss reader reads the fields in the item and displays them as it chooses. Item's fields are:
title
link
description
author
publication date
If there was another field for like forum bread crumbs, no rss feeder would display it, so I'd have ot add it to the title or description.
At one time, I had the bread crumbs in front of the title, but people complained. Not sure why, but I don't use rss feeds myself, but I'm thinking I might start soon. Anyway, I hope this helps. _________________ --Howard

Thanks for looking into it.

Don't use the rssx link, use one of the links on the site's pages. I have it working on Safari here. Maybe you might have to clear your browser cache. Let me know how it goes. _________________ --Howard

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Do the feeds work differently in IE and Opera? I did modify the feed program recently to point to the last post in the topic. This is what Bob The Dog requested. I find it more useful that way myself. You can scroll up if you want to catch earlier posts in the topic. If you think that isn't as useful, I can always hack the code to have an option to do it the original way.
Maybe I'll download the latest version of Opera and give it a try.
Thanks for the feedback. _________________ --Howard

You're welcome.
Windows Live Mail is even better than the Opera reader.
It can show the webpage underneath the message line.
What brings me to my point.
If I look at a message from the "Dutch Synthforum" it shows the message on the web page, (that way you can brows the messages in the reader) but not so at electro-music.com.
Oke, it is not a must, but it would be nice if it did.
Another neat thing of WLM is that when you click on show online (online weergeven). It takes you not to the first or last message, but directly to the particular message/reply in the thread. Cool huh?
