Texas -Based Artists Seem Slighted |
 |
|
This is only my second post, but I felt it was needed to be said.
Being that I am from Texas [u.s.] I am constantly meeting those online with the idea that because I am in the Lone Star State, I am undeserving of my role as an electronic musician. I realize that this is an isolated case scenario as far as online comments made to me, but it seems to become more common as I become more exposed and meet new people.
Why exactly is this?
I take inspiration from all over the globe, both in style, form, substance and execution of my work, so I am not sure I understand the phenomenon. Anyone have some input?

Ignore it.
Or.. maybe you could ask where you SHOULD come from in order to be accepted? |

I'm sorry to hear about this. I certainly don't think you'll get that anti-Texas attitude at electro-music.com. You are welcome here.
The reason anyone holds any discriminatory bias or hatred is because they feel themselves separate from the oneness of creation. Separateness makes one feel incomplete and inadequate. We make up and believe negative stories about others in order to make themselves feel better, by being superior. These stories tend to attact other stories, so they come in groups. If being overtly superior to one group feels so good, why not hate everybody. Anti-Texas feelings might a associated with other anties, like anti-Bush, anti-American, even anti-Republican, anti-Semitic or anti-Muslim. The unfortunate result is that these stories make everyone's life, miserable, as you have pointed have reminded us.
While we are talking about negative feelings:
We not only have make up and believe stories about other people, but about art as well. Sometimes when listening to music, thoughts come to mind like, "too much of this, not enough of that; too much bass; not enough bass; to simple too complex; not pretty enough; too pretty; too similar to that; etc." This happens when to me when I listen to other people's music and my own. I think these thoughs of criticism and judgement come from the same place as the other stories about people.
It's probably best to let those thoughts be by themselves, and listen to the music that playing now with judgement suspendend, because it is the only music that is playing now, and that's pretty special. _________________ --Howard

Well said, Howard
it's very easy to judge other people through our own "deforming glasses".
A few years ago I read a great book about it:
"Vital lies, simple truths" by Daniel Goleman
Every once in a while I go back to read it and it is always enlighting _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Reminds me that for some reason I often get comments about my own musical project which contain references to vikings and winter and skiing and polar bears and whatever people out there thinks is appropriate to Norway. I guess I would have gotten similar twisted comments if I had happened to be turkish, japanese or whatever. |

Each response thus far was insightful and made me look at the issue from different focal points. I appreciate your blunt and to-the-point reply electro
And as for the other answers, yes, I agree. Although this issue was truly a confusing one to me, it was not in the least upsetting me, I simply took notice.
For example, one of the instances involved a comment of "texans listen to country" or some other such nonsense. My parental units had intercouse in Yee-Haw land, and I therefore didn't get a vote in, HEH.
I realize now that the issue I was asking about is really about cultural diversity and the individual comfort zones we as human beings like to keep our skins within.
Thanks to one and all.

maybe is not such a great idea:
I have never seen a red skull with a pizza helmet (riding broncos )
about prejudice I have an interesting anecdote:
I was living in Boston, MA. I met a guy that was a teacher in a primary school in NYC (so, I suspect he should not be extremely ignorant).
He, seriously, asked me if we, in Italy, had goats as pets (I repeat, he was serious). I barely restrained myself from strangling him and informed him that no, we do not consider goats as pets.
Though camels as pets are OK _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

I do not think so. Actually he was a religious man but I am not going to tell you which one was his religion. I do not want to mess with this matter _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube

Welcome, Invisbl. Your avatar does you justice.
I just got back from visiting Mr. Elektro80 in Norway. It was most beautiful. Reminded me of pics I've seen of New Zealand. |
