No, I only like VCOs that drift and don't track over more than 3 octaves. |

And my self-made stripped down version of Ian's VCO from then (even with a metalized polyester film cap.) is working WONDERFULLY!
Many credits to Ian for that design back then. I was going to build more of them, but have since switched to Ken Stone / Ray Wilson PCBs for my VCOs.
I may be looking at the new sliders based one. Cost dependant though.
And now a stripped down version redone from Ian, I'll be watching the price for. If it's compatible with my wallet, I may then shift to them. (I'm again as I did in the 90's, building my own wave shapers, into a separate panel.) |
I AM flipping once again. Having switched back to Press N Peel, I did a new layout of my stripped down version of Ian's VCO from his web page (way back when) to build more of them with PnP. It'll save me money from ordering the other 2.
(I'll also be building more of Thomas Henry's triangle VCOs from his 3080 book as my 1st 2 are working wonderfully at 1V/oct. over 3 octaves, with 2 surface mount tempcos and a pair of standard 2N's trannies, just touching each other. They were mainly intended as VCLFOs, but with their stability, I'll be building more as well.)
But if Ian carries through with a stripped down and they're cheap, I may just go with a pile of them. (Building my own waveform converters of course, as I had back in the 1990s.) |

I could be down for maybe 8 of these. I wan't to make dual osc 4 voice paraphonic pads with a quad sequencer
However, my definition of a "minimal" VCO at least includes a 50% pulse wave, not that it matters _________________ " I went through quite a few trannies til I found one I liked" - Wild Zebra |

It died a long time ago. DOA, basically. Very little interest generated by the poll. Extreme bashing by the troll. Perhaps Mr. Troll could whip something up for you. He knows what you need.

21 yeas looking for about 50 or so boards was more interest than the first Klee generated, and that's sold its 3rd round of 100 out since. It's too bad that a good project gets scuttled by Internet noise.
Thanks for the ones you do put out, Ian. A lot of people appreciate your work. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

Oh well. At least I can go back to my own miniature sawtooth only version PCB of Ian's then. |

You can possibly just modify the layout of the other one?

Mmmm? I'll have to gander at it. I haven't built one or looked at the schematic since I did the new layout for Press N Peel, but, if it's similar enough, that would save me a couple of hours at least.
A couple of questions, before I order parts - I would like to build the first one as close to your specifications as possible:
Digikey (my main supplier) doesn't list the VN0104 or VN0106 at all. Earlier in this thread, you'd mentioned the BS170, but not which suffix. Digikey is listing a whole range of them, in stock.
Another person in reply to you had mentioned the BS170-DS - but I couldn't find that suffix in the Digikey listing of the ones they have.
What parameters should I be watching for, when I choose which of the BS170's to order?
For the OPA2227 - had you used the OPA2227P or OPA2227PA? ($'d at $10 and $5 respectively, at Digikey.
Final question - you've done your tests with the LM394. IIRC - someone else had said in a different thread that the SSM2210 has minorly better specs. Would there be any troubles in my using it, instead? I keep a constant stock of them for VCOs, VCFs and VCAs.
(As to Digikey - I stick with them and Small Bear Electronics, as both come to me from the U.S. with no duty charges. They are both, my strong preferences, for non-local parts sourcing.)
Thanks for any thoughts. Otherwise, I have or have access to, everything else listed on the schematic. |

VN0104 is available from Mouser.
I used just the plain P/N BS170-ND from Digi.

2227PA ($3.96 at Digi) is fine. (10uV offset vs 5uV)

Should be fine.

Excellent! Many thanks Ian! I'll get those ordered as well as the 1% resistors that I haven't, in stock. Once I get a couple of 'in the middle backlogs' finished, I'll then set to work on yours. Greatly appreciated! |

Thanks Bruce. As you can see, the design is just another modification of the Terry Michaels EN 62 circuit. Not exactly rocket science or anything. But certainly better performance than most of the other variants.

Sync? |

Hi Ian,
What would be the best possible way to implement an external sync input on you SAW CORE? . Should it be something similar to the MFOS Vco? Any thoughts on this?
cheers

Well, why should one person's statements be enough to kill off a project for a whole group of interested people? Chin up, my friend! And true, we can build from the schematic, but PCBs are convenient, and can really ease troubleshooting. I hope you won't write this one off yet : )
Cheers,
Kevin |
