This is a question to those who plan to emulate the behaviour od a Dim D with my upcoming Subtle Chorus project.

As you all know, on a vintage Dim D you can get more than 4 modes by pressing several of the 4 pushbuttons at once.

I've analyzed the circuit, and found that there are exactly 6 diffenet modes (surprisingly few if you consider the possible combinations).

The results of my analysis are here:
http://www.jhaible.heim.at/subtle_chorus/dim_d_switches.pdf

Now, I don't expect a lot of people to have access to real, interlocking mechanical pushbuttons, and if you do, there's still the problem of exactly spaced, and possibly rectangular holes in a front panel.
So I would like to replace these pushbuttons with rotary switch: with 6 positions, of course.

This means re-designing the LFO circuit (no problem), but it also means that it would be hard to connect 4 pushbuttons. (Well, maybe evan that would be possible with some diode logic - haven't thought this thru.)

So, is everybody fine with a 6-position switch?

And if so, please give some ideas in what order to place the 6 modes.

JH.

hmmm... how hard would it be to include both options? i'm aware that rotary would be totally sufficient, but some of us will probably at least try to make it like the original (maybe round interlocking switches as somebody posted on the AH...)

but if it's too much work/real estate, then one rotary is really okay.

I like the rotary. Mode order can be 1, 2, 3, 4, 1+4, 2+4

I know having fancy switches is fun. How about making it more simple with 3 switches?

1. LFO Core switch

2. LFO Atten switch

3. Wet Boost switch

gives you 8 variations.

Ok - thanks for all suggestions!

My conclusion is: I *will* replace the simple LFO with something that can be controlled with a 6-pos rotary switch, and I'll find a way to implement other ways of control as well.

And it's possible to decode the 6 modes from 4 switches, too.

A lot of people have suggested three 2-pos toggle switches. I like the idea and and try to make that an option, too.

Then everyone can choose for him(or her)self what to put on the front panel.

JH.

Late to the thread, and something like this can likely be found for less, but here 'tis:

why not do the same as I did with the Dim C clone, just have 4 DPDT swithches. There would be some redundency of modes but that would be the same as the original Dim-D.

The nice thing about interlocking switches is ... that they are interlocking.

You *can* select more than one at a time, but you can also select one, without first unselecting the previous.

... but: That part of the PCB is designed now. It will support every variation we were talking about.
Thanks for all the input!

Is the switch type SPDT? This DPDT array might be helpful:

Original has DPDT.

These goldmine switches are pleasantly cheap, but they are not interlocking as far as I can tell, and mounting them might also be a problem.

As you can see, it appears that each switch has to be toggled individually. It would be up to the user to de-select things.

Aren't you going to add space for them on your PCB? Wink Wink

I can't wait....yum....

Are you definitely using the MN3007 for the BBD Board? I ask because I'd like to order them from SmallBear before he runs out of them, too. Shocked Very Happy

Yes, definitely.
The BBD board design is finished and tested:
http://www.jhaible.heim.at/subtle_chorus/jh_subtle_chorus_BBD_Board_PCB_values.pdf

Still working on the "main board".
My goal is to provide you with a board that allows the use of modern opamps as well as these vintage ones in SIL package plus the original output transistors. Makes the layout a bit complex, and layouting a bit slow, but I hope it will be worth it, in the end.
