This from a friend via email. This is really startling...

A World Transformed

This pretty much says it all!

In his memoirs, "A World Transformed," written five
years ago, George Bush Sr. wrote the following to
explain why he didn't go after Saddam Hussein at the
end of the Gulf War.

"Trying to eliminate Saddam...would have incurred
incalculable human and political costs.
Apprehending him was probably impossible....

We would have been forced to occupy Baghdad and, in
effect, rule Iraq....

There was no viable "exit strategy" we could see,
violating another of our principles. Furthermore, we
had been consciously trying to set a pattern for
handling aggression in the post-Cold War world.
Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally
exceeding the United Nations' mandate, would have
destroyed the precedent of international response to
aggression that we hoped to establish. Had we gone
the invasion route, the United States could
conceivably still be an occupying power in a
bitterly hostile land."

If only his son could read.

Dan Quayle on The Environment

I have a very strong record on the Environment in the United States Senate.
-- Senator Dan Quayle during the VP debate, 10/5/88 (from NYT transcript, 10/6/8Cool. On 10/7/88 the NYT reported that Dan Quayle's League of Conservation Voters rating was 20 out of 100.

Our future competitiveness demands that true environmentalists and responsible leaders not allow the well-intentioned concerns of the American public to be manipulated and exploited as a means to re-establish unnecessary regulatory, economic and social controls.
-- Vice President Dan Quayle

I take my children hiking and fishing, walking in the woods, in the wilderness.
-- Senator Dan Quayle offering proof of his commitment to the environment during the VP debate, 10/5/88 (from NYT transcript, 10/6/8Cool

The National Academy of Sciences says that this level [40 MPG] is not even technically achievable.
-- Vice President Dan Quayle arguing against suggestions to raise fuel efficiency standards for American automobiles. But Richard A. Meserve, who served as the chairman of the academy's study on fuel efficiency, said that Mr. Quayle had misunderstood a report by the academy that had discussed whether cars that efficient would be attractive to American buyers. (New York Times, 8/29/92)

The [Democrats] talked about putting people first. Well, they put people first unless you happen to be a spotted owl or a giant garter snake or some other endangered species and then that seems to have priority. Obviously, you take the bald eagle and things of that sort, of course you're going to make sure that they are saved and that they can live and you're going to take every precaution that you can. But others -- we just need a little flexibility.
-- Vice President Dan Quayle defending his lambasting of Democrats on the Spotted Owl/ Endangered Species issue. (In an interview on Prime Time Live, August 10, 1992. Reported in the NY Times, August 12, 1992)

Our values are creating jobs in America.
-- Vice President Dan Quayle answering Chris Wallace's question: ``[The Council on Competitiveness] has made it easier for businesses to exceed pollution levels, it has delayed regulations on aircraft noise, it has weakened regulations to make apartment buildings more accessible to wheelchairs. Are those your values?'' (ABC's Prime Time Live, August 10, 1992)

How about if we say when it's wet, it's wet?
-- Vice President Dan Quayle when asked to define `wetlands'. (from `What a Waste it Is to Lose One's Mind' -- the Unauthorized Autobiography)

I believe he is exploring his beloved canals on Mars looking for tomatoees. But perhaps he is a speech writer for W. After all he also said;

"I believe that we are on an irreversible trend toward freedom and democracy. But that could change."

and about himself;

"What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind. How true that is."

Salud!

I wish we all could vote the U.S. president. After all, we all have to suffer him/her. Smile

The war on Irak was a moral shame, and a terrible political/economical mistake. In Spain we got rid of our president because of it. I hope Americans can do the same.

Long live Michael Moore. Very Happy

Kracken,

Sorry to ask you to represent the entire voting population of Spain, but I'd like your opinion. The terrorist bombing of the trains just before the election is said to have caused the election to swing against the then seated government. Do you think that it true? Were the people pretty much going to vote that way anyway? Any thoughts about this?

I voted against the seated government (Popular Party, the Republican Party of the U.S.), and would have voted against without the bombings.

President Aznar supported the war (went to the Azores Islands to appear on that photo, voted against the weapon's inspections on the U.N., etc.) against the populace consensus (about 90%). But the pre-election polls all said Popular Party would have won again, though with lesser support. The train bombings had two effects:

* They revived the war (all the dead, the lack of weapons of mass destruction, the lies, the massive demonstrations on the street against it), and Aznar's support, on the mind of the people.
* Trying to break this link between the 200 dead and the Popular Party's decisions (they are a very hierarchical party and no one dared no to support Aznar's decisions in public, not so off the record), the government did all it could trying to link the bombings with Basque separatist terrorsim (ETA). The lied to the foreign corresponsals, they sent letters to all embasies (including the U.N.) to insist in Basque terrorism, and tried to hold off the Al-Qaeda autorship until they could not hide it longer. That enraged A LOT of people A LOT, when we were all devastated by the attack, mobilizing people that would not have voted (in Spain you don't have to register to vote, as in the U.S.).

In my opinion,

* Without the bombings, Popular Party would have won for sure.
* With the bombings but without the lies, it's possible Popular Party would have won a marginal victory. We'll never know for sure.
* With the bombings and the lies...

An indication of how badly Dubya has hurt USA's image in Europe: At the Olympic Games opening ceremony in Athens tonight, Turkey got a FAR warmer welcome than USA. Shocked
I mean, relations between Greece and Turkey are not good; The words "bad" and "blood" spring to mind. For all our sakes, get rid of him ASAP.

Well, there IS the upcoming election, but we know how that came off last time; They'll come up with novel ways of shifting the goalposts, so that might not the way to go, as far as getting rid of Dubya.
Osama and his merry pranksters want Bush in office. He's the best damn recruitment officers they've ever had. He's even causing moderate muslims to support terrorism.
Aaww, I guess I'm stumped. I'm just one of those folks who'll tell you what to do, but haven't got a clue about the HOW. dunno

A. Steve Jobs .. the two others are fictional characters.. A "GREAT" president of the US? Impossible..

The time is surely right to resurrect the old slogan: "Marvin for president!"

Barbie for President!

This forty-five year-old belle may be the most qualified American for the job of president of the United States. I mean, who can say she’s held more than one hundred different jobs. From doctor to astronaut, from fashion designer to army pilot, and from dentist to witch; Barbie’s done it all and quite successfully.

Despite her young appearance, Barbie has quite the experience under her belt, and she might very well be the role model America needs right now. She’s charming, she’s intelligent, she has been in a steady relationship for more than forty years, and she has a nice sense of fashion. Barbie has never had a drug or alcohol problem, and she appeals to everyone all over the world.

In both 1992 and 2000, Barbie ran for president. Her ideas were close to Al Gore’s political ambitions in 2000. One has to say that Barbie’s “Party for Girls” has given serious thought to political issues. From education to environmental issues, Barbie has a well-thought out political opinion. She believes in education, something in which the current president is slacking off. All funds for education have been slimmed down during the reign of this president.

Next to the important topic of education, Barbie makes it clear she is concerned about animal welfare, world peace, and equal opportunities for both sexes. Barbie also states it is time we take care of Mother Earth. Clean air and clean water are vital to healthy living Barbie says. I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t have cast the Kyoto treaty aside like Mr. Bush did.

Since Barbie is also known as a Wiccan, she will definitely make sure the first amendment: freedom of and from religion, is protected for all, and not just for one religion. In my book, that makes her unique. And of course, countering a jihad with a spell might be easier than going to war.

At times like this, I’m sad that Barbie is not a living person, because her political agenda sounds like something many countries need. A fresh wind through the White House, making everything pink might not sound like the best idea I’ve had in years but Barbie your thoughts on education, equality, animal welfare and environmental issues are excellent!

Why is Barbie not running for president this year? I don’t know. I for one wish she would do it again. It would be good to keep the candidates on their toes. Although both George Bush and John Kerry don’t strike me as men who are intimidated by Barbie. Too bad, because I think she is a woman that needs to be reckoned with.

Like I said before, she’s intelligent. So, you’d better watch out. One of these days, a smart girl will walk onto the political arena, and she will kick some political butt. If Barbie continues to run for president, more girls will actually think it is possible to become president of the United States. More girls will be empowered. And who knows, one day there will actually be a President Barbie of the United States of America.
