Being extremely old fashioned - and quite useless with technology - I last year decided I wanted to introduce a tactile control unit to my ProTools LE setup, on which I tend to record mostly acoustic guitar stuff, abetted by the odd spot of sequenced drums, bass and three-fingered piano. Wink My research was conducted around the time of the introduction of the UC 33, so I mailed the good people at Evolution to ask if their box would be compatible with my setup; They assured me there would be No Problemo, Sir, that should work a treat. I splashed out about NoK 2500, roughly 300 Euros at the local music store and took the thing home. Didn't work, so I read the online manual, THEN the ProTools help, which told me to program my box to emulate a JLCooper CS10. Like I said, I'm useless with technology, so at this point I got in touch with Evolution and asked if there were any PT LE templates in the works, and if it was possible to set up the UC 33 to emulate the CS 10, as suggested by Digidesign. "yes, Sir a PPT LE template is in the pipeline, should be with you ain a couple of momths at the latest." Quel surprise, that never materialised, and I was told to try to get it to emulate the CS 10, which I still was unable to do - I truly AM clumsy with computers! To cut a long story (half-) short, I had a series of futile queries dealt with in a pleasant, but "we've got our money, so we won't help you " manner by Evolution, so now I find myself saddled with an expensive, hi-tech DOORSTOP. I've given it to Electro80, whose day gig is IT administrator at a big ad agency, and he says, "IT DON'T WORK!"
Therefore, be wary of handing over the moolah for any Evolution product, they're as nice and as helpful as used car salesmen, and the UC 33 doesn't do what it says on the tin.

Thanks - you see, after posting, I saw that there seemed to bve mainly music reviews, hence the apology. Anyway, I stand by what I wrote, I was - and am - cheesed off and embarrassed at paying €300 for a hi-tech doorstop. Evil or Very Mad

Well.. iit is not quite a doorstop, and it´s shortcomings are all quite typical of many similar products. The worst complaints have come from people buying control surfaces from high profiles vendors.. .. for high profiled DAWs..

The UC33 is not that bad.. but I wouldn´t buy shoes from these guys... don´t do it..

I know a guy whose Control 24 has been replaced four or five times before finding a working one.

I think I know what you mean, Seraph. Tell you the truth, it seems that far too many manufacturers have limited quality control. Maybe someone here could advice me on what control surfaces to consider to get a tactile mixing experience; You see, I really LOATHE mouse-mixing, but my finances are limited indeed.

Salud!

The new Behringer fader box (BCF-something) is getting good reviews, not so the knob box.

You must mean this: http://www.behringer.com/BCF2000/index.cfm?lang=ENG

So the knob box isn't getting good reviews. Too bad. Can you point us to a review?

Thanks...

Salud!

I've only read user eviews in an Spanish forum.

The problem is, the fader box (BCF) stores user prestes, but the knob box doesn't. An user went back to the store to ask for a replacement (he thought his unit was faulty) and the manager called Behringer's to ask about this shortcoming. So they learned there have been so many complaints they are looking for a solution (a new EPROM, redesigning the unit, whatever).

The BCF users are very happy with it.

I have read Dutch reviews of the BCR2000 (rotary) - G2 engine combination, and these are very positive. Doesn't mention an inability to save patches. Does mention a non-official PC patch editor utility for easy patch setup. My 2 cents.

I might be wrong... but didn´t these Behringer devices get rave reviews in Sound On Sound?

I am using the UC 33 still. It is a bit messy, but I am slowly getting the hang of it. It is not great.. but it kinda works. ... most of the time.. at least some of the time... Shocked Confused Rolling Eyes

I have a (discontinued) Peavey StudioMix. It was bundled with cakewalk some years ago. Anyway, besides only sending NRPN messages (WTF?), it can't be reprogrammed. I've made my own hardware translator for this, and it works fine. There's also someone on the web that sells an eeprom update to solve both problems, and you could also use something like MIDIOX (or keykit, pd, max, etc) to translate to CC mssgs also. The one good thing about the sliders is that they are 14bit, instead of usual MIDI 7bit. That's enough for very fine control over OSCs, etc.

The thing is built like a tank, here's a review
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may99/articles/peavey.htm

You can find them cheap on ebay now...
