Michael Hoenig on vinyl |
 |
|
Today I found a mint condition copy of the Michael Hoenig LP : Departure from the Northern Wastelands.
I had this one years ago.
I just listened to it and it sounds just as fresh now as it did back then in 77/78. A real classic. Last edited by elektro80 on Wed Feb 21, 2007 4:57 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Hoenig is a strange one. He made some really fantastic music. Quite dark if I remember so?
My first encounter with Asmus Tietchens too was an LP (Nachtstucke) I found in a carboot sale a few years back- turned out that it was a ltd edition of 800 copies too
This also is very dark, but beautiful- both at the same time- and is produced by none other than Peter Baumann
I found a link to an mp3 from this extraordinary recording here. The track is called "Falter-Lamento". Unfortunately it's not the whole LP, and it's only part of the track, but this one comes highly recommended
(Biotop is good too- a bit like a soundtrack from some dodgy early nineties Fassbinder/ LA SciFi yarn) |

An old friend, a drummer, borrowed "Departure" once. After a serious session of Departure on repeat, having the radio blaring at the same time in the kitchen, skilled selfmedication of the kind only a drummer would know how to accomplish; he reported having visions of of a TD with Baumann, Franke and Hoenig, and Edgar having departed for one hot Edgar and Jon stunt ...because Vangelis had defected to Russia. Those sweet memories of the mid 80s!
That repeat session killed the LP. So that is why I bought it again some years ago. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

"Departure" - no.
I did make some mp3s of it though, so I have it on my iPod. I would love a proper remaster of the original. Hopefully not reworked like what Froese does with the TD discs.. you know.. with handclaps and bongos. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

I have always wanted to hear DFTNW, I don't think i ever made it down here to the southern wasteland, even on vinyl.
It's a pity stuff like this will probably never be available for legit download. I just spent $50 for a copy of Immunity by Rupert Hine, ordered from the USA. It has been fooled with, but only to restore things from the master tapes that were cut due to the limitations of vinyl.
'Make a wish' has a very different middle section which apparently was too scary back in 81. Comes with two bonus tracks as well .
I still remember being pissed off that the CD of 'Hounds of Love' was missing the really great remix of 'Running up that hill' from the cassette version. |
