Mackie Spike: A desktop solution for 24-bit/96kHz audio |
|

Recording music on a Mac or PC just got exponentially easier with Spike, a complete digital recording solution from Mackie. Spike consists of the XD-2 USB 24-bit 96kHz Audio/MIDI Interface featuring clean, high-headroom Mackie mic preamps and onboard SHARC dynamics processing; incredibly easy-to-use Tracktion multitrack audio recording software with unlimited track count and VST plug-in support; and the Nomad Factory Blue Tubes Warmer Phaser plug-in. Quite simply, this is the easiest open-ended system for computer music production.

Come packaged with Ableton Live - a nice feature I'd say... |

I'm an mBox user, and that's got a MAJOR problem as far as I'm concerned: It's USB powered, which means that the internal preamps become really saggy when they are fed rough transients. I know you're supposed to back off the gain, but then you lose the dynamics, so I had to take my old Mackie mixer out of the cupboard and put that in front of the mBox. That gives me three advatages:
- The signal has been "tamed" before entering the mBox
- I can utilise the mixers inserts to add compression before the mBox
- I can eq the signal in the analog domain. The eq plugs that come with ProTools LE are not very musical, and I don't at the moment have funds to buy third party stuff.
Anyway, the Spike looks interesting; I've had VERY good service from my Mackie mixer, and the mic pres in that little bugger are really good. Reckon if I'd been in the market for my first computer based recording setup, I'd be very tempted to go with the Spike. _________________ Where there are too many policemen, there is no liberty.
