http://www.symbolicsound.com/cgi-bin/bin/view/Products/Pacarana

I am trying to figure out exactly how powerful this thing is, but after studying Carla's book the decision to get one is already made.

Any users of Kyma here?

Regards,

Pere

Howard has a Capybara, and there are some other members using Kyma too ... but I suspect there might be a couple of new Kyma users soon ... anyway ... I'll have to check the limit for my credit card Wink

Oops sorry for the duplicate info Carlo ...

the value of Capybaras will plummet. it should be "easy" to find used ones (so to speak) Wink

i posted this over on Gearslutz this morning...

phew... glad this is finally public...

as a long-time kyma user, i (and many others) have had access to this information for a while.. and it's been hard to keep it tight-lipped with so many rumors flying around.

here are a few points, that should be mostly obvious from the announcement on the SSC website:

- the new systems do NOT have and audio interface built in

- only CERTAIN interfaces can be used with the system. each one has to be tested and coded in to work. right now the only interfaces you can use with the new systems are the TC Konnekt series, some M-Audio ones, and, happily, the Apogee Duet. they are working on MOTU compatibility next.

- despite the fact i sold my Capy320 to buy one of these new systems, i will still highly recommend the Capy320s.. the new systems are NOT cheap. yes, they are more powerful.. but you're still in for nearly $3000 at an entry level. on the other hand, a used Capybara320 can be had for not much over $1000 and it runs the SAME software *and* includes audio and midi (and incredible sounding convertors, at that). so, the old hardware is a perfectly good way to get into the Kyma universe for a lot less money. plus, unlike the new hardware, it is expandable.

i think SSC has done a great thing by introducing new, more powerful, and smaller hardware, yet at the same time, keeping the old hardware totally compatible and relevant.

i know a lot of people were looking for a sub-$1000 price tag on new Kyma hardware.. but the new Paca and Pacarana systems are lot more expensive than that.

as you see. the Pacarana is $4000 and the Paca is $3000. for the power, however, they are a lot cheaper than similarly configured Capybara 320s.

it's a great day for SSC.. a wonderful company and wonderful (and genius) people...

Is there a list of usable interfaces somewhere?

i'm surprised this information has not made it into their webpage.. as the device simply is not usable without an ADDITIONAL interface...

you need to firewire the audio interface directly to the Pacarana and then audio out that to your main system/interface.

a couple of months ago the interface looked like this:

TC Electronic Konnekt 48D (12 FireWire I/O)
TC Electronic Konnekt 24D (4 FireWire I/O + 8 ADAT)
TC Electronic Konnekt Live (4 FireWire I/O + 8 ADAT in black case)
TC Electronic Konnekt 8 (4 FireWire I/O)

M-Audio FastTrack Pro (2 in/4 out USB)
Sennheiser PC 146 USB Headset (stereo headset w/ mic)
Logitech USB Headset w/mic

i begged them to add the Apogee Duet .. since it's a beautiful sounding interface and highly portable... (and i own one)... and they did...

they were also looking to add the MOTU interfaces.. which may be good to go by now.

so, just to be clear, you also need to buy a supported firewire interface to get the system to work.. it needs a dedicated interface.

In all fairness, on the Pacarana page there is this text: "Audio and MIDI input and output is handled via an external FireWire or USB converter or, for current Kyma owners, through a Capybara-320 with Flame FireWire I/O.". BUT - I cant' find the list of supported devices.

Do you mean for the computer connection, or do you still mean the audio/MIDI interface?

Since everything is Capy320 compatible, I suppose they still use DSP56k - does anybody know? We need pictures of the innards!

i mean you need a dedicated interface to get audio in and out of it...

i mistakingly said "for the system to work"

you can run the system, without audio, via firewire.. but to hear anything you need a dedicated firewire interface hooked up to it.

Does it *have* to be a firewire interface? Do internal soundcards not work?

That's what they say. IMO it's the best solution with respect to latency, other than a built in analogue IO. Otherwise there would be 2 x driver delays and 2 x IO delays. It does limit the choice of audio interface, but obviously less so than built in audio would do.

the dedicated interface firewires directly into the Paca/rana. it is not connected to your computer at all, except the audio cables into your system.

i'm glad they have done Apogee Duet support. it is clearly the highest quality interface at that small size... and i don't think i will miss the Capybara convertors with the Duet (at least i hope).

I would be pretty happy to pick up a used Capy. It wouldn't be for a while, so hopefully the prices will drop further.

I have not yet used Kyma, but the rep sure is good (pro really).

I'm also a Kyma Capybara user, and I'm very happy to see a smaller, more powerful unit. But I use MOTU interfaces, with which I'm also very happy, and I'm holding off until they announce MOTU compatibility.

hi richard

hope you're doing well.. happy new year!

as of a few weeks ago, carla said that MOTU interfaces were next on their list. i had recommended the Apogee Duet and within days they had it working. i, like you, was holding out for compatibility with a spare interface i already had.. and they assured me the duet is working. i suspect MOTU compatibility won't be far away, especially considering the popularity of their smaller boxes.

probably once they get over these immediate busy days of site updates and shipping they'll be able to hit the coding.

(taylor)

And a happy new year to you too, Taylor.

In fact, when I asked them about it, Carla said MOTU was on their list, and probably wouldn't be hard to support, so I expect that they'll be compatible soon.

looks very cool , it definately seems a better price in some relative sense -$4000 yes - bit the power of that system as standard ? its a better buy , maybe relative to old second hand systems not , depends but its certainly a better deal than the older systems and way of buying cards.

The fact it uses or works direct to firewire seems better for many , the fact it only uses certain soundcards seems to be something that symbolic sound will remedy naturally ( unless they wish to limit their sales deliberately !).

All in all i think this a good move for Kyma , they need to maybe evolve the software also on some levels now , add vst support so it shows as a vst or something and maybe move a step closer to general musicians and
accomodate the beginners more , i'm really glad to see this newsystem though , it makes much more sense than the older one does right now for many musicians ( though the old system remains amazing and when it appeared it was way ahead of anything else )

The only question is where do i get $4000 Smile

i'm in the same ball park as others though.Nord g3 wave ?

i love kyma.. the sounds and the functionality.. i just think they are lagging way behind the GUI department... that's why a lot of people turn to max/msp.. which has an amazing completely customizable GUI for your patches. now, maybe SSC sees themselves as something quite different from max/msp.. and don't feel the level of interface design is as crucial...

but, moving into the new years i think it should be a priority for them..

i'm not talking in the building of sounds, but in the "VCS" (as kyma calls it).. still looks like 80's.. not even 90's... but 80's!

I have to agree with you there, Taylor. I believe the original research into Kyma started in the late 80s, when it was a very non-realtime version running on a MacPlus (or so I've heard), so perhaps the GUI's design isn't surprising.

But it could certainly stand updating.

Actually, I see that they do support the MOTU Ultralite mk3, so there is some MOTU support; just none of the interfaces I use. But if they can support the Ultralite, they should be able to do others too reasonably easily.
