Gammalan, as the title implies, is a composition based on Carlos Gamma tuning system (the same I used for Adagio Gamma) using a gamelan inspired virtual orchestra.

Cool! I reckon your Carlos Gamma tracks are my favourite of your microtonal stuff so far.

I was very interested in your synth setup with different sounds mixed in differently according to the note velocity. Because...

I went to a real gamelan concert about 4 years ago. In the interval they let the audience play their instruments; disappointingly there was only one person apart from me who had a proper go at it (IIRC). Anyway, with some of the instruments (mainly the set of circular gong-type things with a blob sticking up in the middle) it made a big difference where and how you hit them. In the performance of (mostly) Indonesian music they were playing it totally straight - hit the blob as accurately as possible for the purest longest ring. You could get more noisy and percussive sounds if you wanted, but you can't go far before you end up with just a dull thud.

I was recording my tam-tam last weekend. Now you can't play a tune on that, but I did manage to get all kinds of different sounds by hitting it with different things (mainly affecting the attack) and in different places (seems to have areas of different resonances all over it). Looks like you've managed to bring some of that to the gamelan.

Gordon

Thanks Gordon Exclamation
don't tell me you have listened to ALL my microtonal stuff Shocked (but I have noticed an increase of downloads from the UK lately Wink )
I am really not an expert of gamelan but I know someone who even used to play with such an ensemble and is a registered user here so, maybe he could chime in on this subject Cool

Has anyone here created any G2 gamelan (or Gammalan) patches?
