Electronic Music Promotion Guide |

Considering selling your music online?
Here's your options:
Mp3.com
Goog points = Free Setup
Bad points = You will be competing with major labels and artists. Most of them not in anyway related to your style of music (think about who visits these sites)
Only major artists and labels are listed on there main page.
You have to get all your CD's Barcoded
Independent artist pages usually generate more income in advertising for Mp3.com than the combined artist sales! ( they cover there pages with ads)
Vitaminic.com
Goog points = option of free or $60 setup for some additional promotion
Bad points = You will be competing with a large variety of music styles (not just elctronicmusic) which means your less likley to be featured and there visitors are less likely to be into there electronica than if you where selling from a electronic music only store.
As with mp3.com unless your already well known your page will just be there to generate more income in advertising for Vitaminic.com ( there ads aren't as bad as mp3.com though)
They do not stream mp3 media only real media (Bit limiting dont you think).
Junglejar.com
Goog points = Free setup, Unlimited CD Sales, No barcode needed, Free web page, Mp3 Streams, Public and Commercial Reviews, Strictly electronic music only.(all vistors to the site are looking for electronic music) It's run by electronic artists and producers! (There alot more likley to know what you want unlike the above)
Bad points = I don't know of any but let me know if you spot one and i'll will personaly put it straight! (A helping hand costs nothing)
Junglejar.com was setup to provide electronic music producers with an alternative to mp3.com, Vitaminic.com and many other Independant music stores.
WHY!
It's about time we (electronic music producers) had a way of promoting our music without having to compromise. Why list your music in a directory full of bands (mp3.com,Vitaminic.com). How many Oasis fans are serious about electronic music? not many!
We need to know that the people browsing for music are looking for our sort of music. No matter how good it is some people will just never get it!
Junglejar.com's main aim is to get as many electronic music producers and artists selling there CD's from one directory!

Most people I've seen discussing this have abandoned MP3.COM or at least cut back to the three song level. But MP3.COM is still very well known and may as well be used for the exposure it can provide. In fact, you should exploit any opportunity that you can find. Here are some thoughts:
Join mailing lists where your kind of music is on-topic. But do more than post LTMM messages. Participate in the forums so that your messages won't be seen as spam. Write reviews of other artists' CDs and concerts. Then slip in a write up of how you made your latest CD. Write an artist's account of your latest concert.
Do free concerts at other people's events. Greg Howard (a fabulous Stick player, btw) and Second Sufis have played out front at NEARfest. You could offer to play at the local planetarium or museum, during peak hours, of course. Don't forget to sell your merchandise at these events!
When preparing for a concert, write an extensive press releas that goes way beyond the simple Who, What, Where, and When announcements. Provide additional biographical material about yourself. Make it easy for the local press to turn your press release into a full blown article. That could result in extra free publicity!
Some or all of these techniques might not suit you, but these are my basic suggestions. I'd love to hear your thoughts on other ways. _________________ Bill Fox------------------|\-------------
