WD40 is indeed one of several toolboxes in a can. The net is full of discussions about whether WD40 is suitable for restoring pots or not. There are products such as Kontakt, Deoxit and several others that are specifically made for cleaning and/or lubricating contacts, switches and pots.
If the pot hasn't been used for a long time, simply rotating it back and forth a few (hundred or so...) times may cure it by getting rid of oxidation build up. But all too often it will soon be crackling again.
Swapping the pot for a new one may be the best solution. A good pot should last a long time. If it's for a guitar, you will of course need special expensive pots that has been imbued with Jimi Hendrix Mojo or you will not get a Good Tone

'tis true! If you use inferior parts that have not been blessed by the Powers That Know (read: costs at least twice as much as yer common or garden replacement parts) you will HAVE A BAD GUITAR TONE!
For further reference, read any interview with Eric Johnson; The man even has a special tonal preference for 9 volt batteries... _________________ Where there are too many policemen, there is no liberty. Ok, after much thought a spray of WD40 it is!
Its the volume guitar on my Ibanez that is causing the problem, it has been getting more crackly lately.
If the spray doesn't fix it I will but a decent (but cheap) pot sanctified with the light of the full mood and slap it in. |
