Time running out, and a Metlay hasn't checked his stream... |
|
|
I need to get set up for my set, and no one sent me a port number and password yet. Would someone please leave me a PM with this information asap? I have to check that and make sure it's working, then get ready for what I need to do to host my shift on Stillstream, which will actually be harder than playing my set.
thanks in advance
mike
ps. where is the link to the newest rev of the poster? _________________ mike metlay * metlay@atomiccity.com

Unfortunately, I am sad to announce that AncientByrd Land has had to drop out of the festival this weekend. Sorry to see you go Ed ... But hopefully next time!
I am happy to announce that Astronota (1/4 of Boiar) has taken Ed's slot and will be performing in his place. Welcome aboard JONO! _________________ ElectroCasa |

Subject description: chat seems to be down |
|
|
Hey, there.
Testing out my stream again now, goes to the world and back to home great, but I cannot get onto the chat room, either via XP or Mac. No problems in recent weeks, but today no chat so far. Happened on NYE as well.
Anyway, I'll be set to stream at posted time. I'll check the chat again later.
CHAT OK 30 minutes later. Paul says, "Just keep trying." _________________ When the stream is deep

Subject description: Source code, recording and applet for AI set |
|
|
The Java source code and an MP3 recording for my performance of Scrabble today is here. You can also play an applet directly from here, although the browser tends to take too much screen real estate away from the game board.
In the first pass the Java code just did a depth first search of all words after each move, from the most recent move, and played the words as block piano chords. We added midi channels, patches, delays, sustain, panning, etc. and a GUI for adjusting these at run time in increments. There is a .cfg file under the gamestomidi4/scrabble subdirectory that you can use to set up initial play and add new scales. All other parameters can be tweaked during performance.
This version of the program generates a static sequence after each move by mapping a word list to a java.sound.midi.Sequence object. The next step will be to replace the static sequence/sequencer with a javax.sound.midi.Synthesizer implementation so that I can use per-channel tempos and play with things like least-common-multiple tempos. Right now tempo is global to all midi channels. A channel comes alive when its velocity and period are greater than 0. Playing around with accents of non-multiple lengths makes for some funky, common-multiple polyrhythms.
This just uses Java run time environment 1.5 or 1.6 out of the box, no special hardware or software. I did use Live ping-pong delays at one point in today's performance, and a little reverb at fadeout time. Not essential, and I'll probably stop doing that after I get my more dynamic timing setup in place. Deadline is September 30, when students and I will perform the game at a campus event. I'll post that version when I get it working in a month or three.
Great day!

I had a blast!
Thanks everyone for your great performances - thanks to the operators for the perfectly seamless switching and to all chatters for the good mood.

The servers were in a good mood yesterday
A big thank you to all who performed, I heard some really beautiful music.
Some sets I didn't hear yet, like Jason's and mono poly but will catch up on that later. _________________ Jan
