Interconnection for eChucK Subject description: We found some cheaper clips! |
|
|
MyPasswordIs123456 popped into the chatroom and posted about his project ideas, and in the process told me about these really neat clips which might be perfect for eChucK. Here is the link:
http://www.hobbytron.com/Fahnstalk-Clips.html
They are much cheaper than 40 or 50 cents each, and we need a bunch of some sort of clip or terminal. The best ones I found are great, but look at that cost. The Fahnstalk clips are only 15 cents each. This is important as the cost of the connectors dominates the overall project cost, being like more than half of the parts cost!
They look a little large and I worry about shorting, but maybe they are perfect. Any other interconnect ideas?

I found dimensions from another website:
5/16" W X 3/4" L
8 mm W X 19 mm L
source: http://www.oselectronics.com/ose_p113.htm
Probably not in the EChuck free form spirit, but I think a minimal patch panel would be beneficial for desktop use, PCB protection and larger connector support.
Just a suggestion:
Material:
2 x ABS Plastic plate
4 x PCB Spacer
4 x Screws
4 x Rubber feet
Build notes:
The base of the unit is a plastic plate, the PCB is screwed directly to this plate. The top plate is the patch panel, it is attached to the bottom plate using PCB spacers. Wires form the PCB are routed to the patch panel through the connector clips mounting holes. Rubber feet for increased stability when patching.
To further lower the cost, the PCB spacers, plastic plates and rubber feet could be cut out from recuperated material and glued/bounded together.

Hi again, love your sig. I am stoopid too from time to time, aren't we all?
I'd say that your idea has merit, and I would like to think of it as a good thing for a base plate for eChucK. For many of the modules, it would be best to have the interconnect components soldered directly to the PCB without a sandwich structure as you drew, IMHO. However, I've been thinking about an eChucK sculpture and how it would physically exist, and one nice thing would be a base plate of some sort, perhaps being the power supply.
We could make it so that a variety of power sources would be optionally supported including a wall-wart jack, some type of battery holder, and a solar cell panel. Given the board designed to support all three, the user could choose which components to populate depending on which or all of the desired methods of powering might be.
It would also be a good idea to make a patch panel as you drew in your diagram that exists on top of the power supply base plate. That's another new idea, thanks! Please do keep the creative thoughts flowing as that is the fuel of the eChucK fire so to speak.

In this thread:
http://www.electro-music.com/forum/post-245359.html#245359
amplex shows us how he used bolts for the connectors of his Lunetta project. That was with alligator clips and larger bolts, but it got me thinking about how we could make our interconnect on eChucK dirt cheap and still practical - bolts!
I think 4-40 hardware might be a tad large but it might be OK too. It has to secure loops of 22 or 24 gauge solid wire, so it can't be all that small. My calipers measure a 4-40 nut to be 7mm in diameter so we would need to space the bolts 8 to 10 mm apart.
Hmm, just food for thought, anyone have suggestions regarding this interconnect method? _________________ "Let's make noise for peace." - Kijjaz |
