Hi all, I finally got myself to the field recording posts, I have had the zoom h4n for around a year and a half and really like it, at first I thought it had a bit more white noise than the md, I must have done something with a setting as it seems good now. Small size does make it handy and mics all in 1 unit fast and easy, sometimes takes a while to be ready turning it on though loading up everything.

I'm looking for a good field recording device...it's finally time to upgrade from MD and MP3 players that can record.

Any suggestions from the folks here? The main limit I run into with my other devices is dynamic range (either I leave the gain down, and quiet passages get lost in noise, or gain up and loud passages get clipped VERY badly). So I'd like 24bit, with a good limiter or mild compressor, just so recordings don't get ruined.

Mostly I'd use it for gathering samples, recording concerts occasionally, or other life events. But if the noise floor is low enough, and the stereo field of good quality, I can see going for more lengthy ambient recordings.

It seems the Olympus are highly regarded. Anybody use the new Tascam 07mkII? I also like the features of the Zoom H4n, and seems very flexible, but the bulk would have to be worth it. Pocket recording is usually most important to me (kind of like the best camera is the one that's on you!).
