Here are the guitar notes for the Close Encounters UFO song:

Code:

1 - A 440.00 string 1 5th fret
2 - B 493.88 string 1 7th fret
3 - G 392.00 string 1 3rd fret
4 - G 196.00 string 3 open
5 - D 293.66 string 2 11th fret

Play them and enjoy! (note: (pun intended) i need to repair my guitar before i can make an audio sample, sigh).

Thanks for reminding me of the notes - I just had a little Close Encounter jam Very Happy

Here's a tip for making it easier to play. Instead of the big moves and the open string, you can hold your hand in the same position, only moving your fingers, as you would normally play a scale in one position. Use the index finger on fret 5, the ring finger on fret 7 and the pinky on fret 8. Here's a tab:

Code:

  E|---5--7--------------
  B|---------8-----------
  G|---------------7-----
  D|------------5--------
  A|---------------------
  E|---------------------

Now that the guitar is all working, invention and everything, I was doing my own UFO jam and enjoying it immensely. This is a good little riff to know, and I'm planning to play it on my show next week!

Thanks to my friends Rob and Are (and me also) for figuring out the following five notes and their fingering, the UFO theme from the movie "Close Encounters".

First Position:  The Greeting
Second Octave

1 - A 440.00 string 1 5th fret
2 - B 493.88 string 1 7th fret
3 - G 392.00 string 2 8th fret
4 - G 196.00 string 4 5th fret
5 - D 293.67 string 3 7th fret

Tab:
1 ---5---7---------------
2 -----------8-----------
3 -------------------7---
4 ---------------5-------
5 -----------------------
6 -----------------------

Put your index finger on fret 5, your ring finger on fret 7, and your pinkie finger on fret 8.  That way you can play it like a scale, moving across the neck but not up and down.  There are also other positions on the neck where you can get the same notes but in a different octave.  For example:

Second Position:  The Mother Ship
First Octave

1 - A 220.00 string 3 2nd fret
2 - B 246.94 string 3 4th fret
3 - G 196.00 string 4 5th fret
4 - G  98.00 string 6 3rd fret
5 - D 146.83 string 5 5th fret

Tab:
1 -----------------------
2 -----------------------
3 ---2---4---------------
4 -----------5-----------
5 -------------------5---
6 ---------------3-------

That one is the lowest octave version on a six string guitar with standard tuning.  It can also be played with one hand position, just put the index finger on the 2nd fret and so on.  Here is another one:

Third Position:  Earth's Response
Second Octave (same notes as First Position)

1 - A 440.00 string 2 10th fret
2 - B 493.88 string 2 12th fret
3 - G 392.00 string 3 12th fret
4 - G 196.00 string 5 10th fret
5 - D 293.67 string 4 12th fret

Tab:
1 -----------------------
2 ---10--12--------------
3 -----------12----------
4 -------------------12--
5 ---------------10------
6 -----------------------

This third version can be fingered with just the index finger on fret 10 and the ring finger on fret 12.  Then finally the first two of the above three versions can be played 12 frets higher as follows:

Fourth Position:  The Scout Ship
Third Octave

1 - A 880.00 string 1 17th fret
2 - B 987.77 string 1 19th fret
3 - G 783.99 string 2 20th fret
4 - G 392.00 string 4 17th fret
5 - D 587.33 string 3 19th fret

Tab:
1 ---17--19--------------
2 -----------20----------
3 -------------------19--
4 ---------------17------
5 -----------------------
6 -----------------------

and

Fifth Position:  Earth's Jam
Second Octave (same notes as First Position)

1 - A 440.00 string 3 14th fret
2 - B 493.88 string 3 16th fret
3 - G 392.00 string 4 17th fret
4 - G 196.00 string 6 15th fret
5 - D 293.67 string 5 17th fret

Tab:
1 -----------------------
2 -----------------------
3 ---14--16--------------
4 -----------17----------
5 -------------------17--
6 ---------------15------

Try them all, then mix them up at different tempos and have yourself a UFO jam session!
