I agree, Tom. Very strange. Actually, the fact that sections of the night sky inside the lightning areas are darker is very odd. I had imagined that these would have had the same darkness/lightness.. as the area outside. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Still not quite what my camera captured today... I´ve continued working with the Topaz BW Effects plugin.

BTW, I suspect that the reason Venice is sinking is because of the weight of all the digital cameras. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Could that be a byproduct of artefacts caused by Aperture's sharpening algorithms? I know it can have odd effects on blown out highlights- especially when using the burn tools. _________________ ACHTUNG!

Nope.. same thing in the RAW file.
Actually the image has not been sharpened much at all. And most of the work happened in DXO Optics anyway. _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

I have trouble getting good night photos. With analog cameras, it was a matter of finding ISO 1600 film. Digital cameras with an ISO 1600 setting are harder to find than the film equivalent, and when you do find one, it co$$$$t$$$ a lot.
Nice canal pic. |

You can take brilliant shots with 100ASA film ('analogue') in the dark. All you really need is a decent tripod. In fact you need a decent tripod with any camera- including digital.
I hope that helps. _________________ ACHTUNG!

I am surprised how well I have done with simple point and click snapshot digital cameras at festivals like electro-music 20xx, getting photos of fairly rapidly changing video projections in a darkened room at night, by just bracing myself against a pillar or wall. _________________ "Time is a ruler across the knuckles of eternity."

I took pictures of the plough last year handholding at 4 seconds! (ISO 400, wide open f1.7). And they were sharp. The trick is to use your body as a tripod and, most importantly, breathing in and holding your breath while you expose. _________________ ACHTUNG!

That's true! I have a large video tripod and a much smaller and portable one. I never have either when I need them on hand - such is fate, I guess.
A timer also works - you can put the camera down on a stable surface and hit the shutter. |

Nice! Now all you need is a telescope connected to a camera to get some Jovian images.
I have some moon shots somewhere... |
