It does seem tragic. I once came across a small Teddy Bear in the gutter like that; also tragic.

Me, too! It's many millions of miles away, is many times smaller than the sun, and you can STILL see it? Astounding.

So, yeah. Smaller than the sun AND further away from us than the sun even at its closest.

These were taken on a backpacking trip this Oct. in the Otter Creek Wilderness in West Virginia. The trip had virtually no scenic vistas being in the woods all the time.I was able to shoot through a "window" in the foliage just outside my camp. One was in the morning capturing the mist. The other was as the sun was setting behind me illuminating the mountains in the east.Little did I know that as I took the sunset one there were a couple bears 20-30 feet behind me.Didn't occur to me as they ran away that I had a camera in my hand. Embarassed

My in-laws live in WV in a rural area (it just occurred to me that they're the only people on their road who aren't either living in a double-wide or running a farm). I would love to see more of the wild parts of the state. Ain't it great? Smile

Damien,do you know where exactly?
This is in the Monongahela Natl. Forest near Elkins W.V.
The forest is pretty big and covers about 919,000 (not including private lands) acres in a north to south swath. The roads going to many of these places are on the par with an amusement park ride.
A guy I met on the trail (after 3 solid days of not seeing anything with 2 legs)
was talking about a different Wilderness in the same forest where a guy has been missing since May! "It's pretty middle of nowhere"

That's a huge forest! Love to visit it. I'll have to try not to get lost, or at least expand my foraging and shelter skills. Laughing

My in-laws are further east, near Charlestown. We visit them often, since it's only an hour away - less if there's no traffic mash-ups. Maybe the missus and I can try camping out at Monongahela next summer using my in-laws as a departure point.

They were hiding that bomb for 20 years! Pretty good work.
And now Woodford suggests that he just might be willing to accept his job back again after being sacked for digging in the dirt.
