Subject description: Any ideas how to do this?
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Hi everyone, new guy here, found this great forum full of experts so here goes-

I am trying to send a pulse from my drum machine to 2 inputs, the first is going to a clock input on a sequencer the second to an envelope generator, but it works fine on either alone, however when I use a splitter to connect both, the envelope is hogging the pulse and the sequencer is not seeing it. I think the pulse is about 5 volts.

I am not really versed in electronics so I would be greatful if anyone could shed some light on this, a simple solution would be great, I have some resistors and diodes available and some stripboard so I am hoping I can make a little box up to allow me to split the clock so both devices see it.

Thanks

Bear

If you are using a coaxial splitter (you didn't describe the splitter), then you should know that it attenuates the signal. The input thresholds might be different on different equipment, explaining the results you are getting.

Why not just hard-wire the two inputs together? As long as your source can drive the load, then there is no harm in doing this. The harm happens when you wire two *outputs* together, that's a no-no. I'd just make a cable or connector that hooks them both up together.

Bit hard to tell without knowing the details ... but looks like a load problem assuming the splitter is just some wire connections ... if so, a passive circuit (diodes + resistors) is not likely to help you out, but a couple of transistors would probably be needed.

It smells to me like the impedance (resistance) of the sequencer is less than that of the envelop generetor. Thus, the current goes through the former and not the later - or at least not enough to trigger the generator. How to fix it? let me ponder. one idea would be to insert a resistance in series on the sequence side.

Do you have a multimeter? resistors, or a 4K variable pot?

Ken.

Thanks guys! I was using a 2into1 "y" splitter and it turns out that it was a piece of *(^£$%!

Before finding out I thought perhaps it was something to do with impedance hence my thought about resistors, I was thinking of putting a resistor in series with the envelope generator though Embarassed

Anyway the splitter was faulty on one side Rolling Eyes

But thanks a bunch for the suggestions

Yes, I reconnected using a different splitter and all was as it should be. Embarassed

Cheers

OK, that means we're done. Let's split!
