Does anyone have info on interfacing the Yamaha Breath Controller line ? I haven't been able to come up with any tech specs or circuits and wanted to be sure before I bought one.

what exactly do you mean by interfacing?

you can use a yahama bc with all (yamaha) synths/controllers featuring a bc input e.g. cs01, dx -, vl - or ex series (midi synths will transmit cc 02) or you can convert the bc data to midi cc with a converter e.g. from midi solutions.

hope this helps.

Thanks klangumsetzer,

I should have been more clear. I DIY want interface circuitry and breath controller specs. I already know I can buy interfaces, I want to do the electronics myself!

Hi dslocum
The BC1 has a stereo miniplug - it expects to see a neg. 9 volts on the tip, and it provides a variable control voltage at the ring between 0 and about neg. 5 volts (response can be trimmed on the unit).
Search online for the service/schematics for the Yamaha CS01 - the BC1 circuit is included in there.
There will be details on my website very soon of my CS01 mods, which include using the BC input for external control from a midi-CV converter.

dslocum,

I seem to recall that Electronic Musician magazine ran a DIY project back for the Yamaha breath controllers in the mid/late 1980's that outputs a CV to a VCA for audio level control of a static volume source. I hope that made sense. Anyway, the CV could be tapped off to control a VCF which would be more useful IMHO. If I get a chance, I'll dig thru my file cabinet and see if I still have it. I'm not sure if I saved it or not.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I see the controller input on the schematic. Looks pretty easy to interface, but do you know if the newer BC3 model has the same interface?

actually there are two knobs on the cs01 to scale the bc signal: one to control the vca amount and on to control the cutoff frequency.

the newer bc3 has two adjustment screws to alter the offset and to scale the breath (velocity/pressure) to midi cc #2 curve.

in principle the bc input could be used for cv control too.

That's right - have a look at this video where I've used a stereo miniplug with the tip left unconnected to introduce external voltage control via the ring connection.

Since it was mentioned here... does the BC3 works without problems with the Yamaha CS01II?
I have one on my way, but am a bit afraid it might not work too good, as I heard there are some differences between it an the BC1...

hej paugi,

yes, the bc3 works as well: tested it myself and found no differences except for the extended customization options of the bc3.

however _i_ like the bc(1) better than the bc3 because the srewed on blow pipe of the bc3 has the tendency to fall off and the bc1 feels more comfortable (for an ex wind player) than the headphone-style bc3.

hope this helps
