Subject description: Looking for a basic IC that will act as a basic synthesizer chip

Hi, I have a really fast turnaround on this project that needs to generate basic instrument sounds like a harp. My first idea was to just use an external midi box. It takes midi in and produces stereo out. However I haven't found one small enough yet (about the size of a fist). Has anyone ever heard of one that small?

My second idea was to find an IC that can take a midi signal and generate the audio out. I found this atmel chip called the Dream Sound Synthesizer: http://www.atmel.com/dyn/products/devices.asp?family_id=618 which is made for cell phones that can do exactly that, but its not available in any of the low-quantity resellers. Does anyone have any ideas?

I don't need polyphony. I'm using an arduino to generate the midi data or controlling data.

Thanks for any info.

You can try Thomas Henry and my GM Voice project per following link:

Some of the smaller daughterboards would fit into your palm. The largest one db50xg is maybe the size of your whole hand. THere's a guy on ebay in Shanghai that sells them for US$25+US$15 shipping. However it takes like 8 weeks to go from China to USA at that shipping rate. To Sweden might be a little faster, but you can use a faster shipment method for more money.

You might also want to look at the Soundgin. I don't know that you'll get a harp sound out of it but you will get some interesting sounds Smile
