Hello!
First of all, congratulations to all the well done jobs posted here. I feel soooo small compared to you, synth builders...
This is the first time I decided to post in this forum. However, I have spent the last year learning the basics of synth electronics here. I think I have read at least twice all the topics (I almost consider Uncle Krunkus as a part of my family...), and before starting a bigger modular I built up this kind of rustic mini-modular.
It is an entirely hand made synth, component by component with a self design. 8 steps serial or double 4 steps parallel sequencer, 2 vco's, mixer, vcf, ad eg + vca and lfo + white noise. It runs on 12v but it also can be operated from a single 9v battery.
Greetings from Spain

Welcome to the forum Paco. You will really like this very active group. We look forward to seeing more posts and build pictures !
Nice synthesizer cabinet. I am are eager to hear what sounds come from it, as are others I am sure. Keep up the nice work.

Looks nice and tight paco! I like that you can choose between 2x4 or just 8 steps, and batterypower is always a good way to go. _________________ There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Sweet build, Paco! Thanks for sharing the pic and sounds.
What designs did you use for the filters/VCO's? Can you share some specifics on the modules?
Thanks -

Thanks again.
These modules are based on very simple designs.
The sequencer is a 4017 driving 4016 analog switches. But there is current in the bus outputs instead of voltage (the pots work as variable resistors). I did this because at the beginning it was planned to feed two 555 oscillators. So...
The first module is not a real VCO. It is a 555 osc + 4017 as a frequency divider, so I get pulse and square waves.
Then I discover the 40106 VCO in this forum and the second module (a real VCO) was born. It has a CV in and a current in to be fed by the seq.
The VCF is basically the same as the WP20 filter.
The EG is a monostable 555. This is the only one I have designed completely from scratch. It has attack, release, and gate length controls. The VCA is a basic LM3080.
And finally a simple 4069 tri LFO with a voltage divider. The noise comes from a typical "cutting collector" circuit.
And that is it...I began with the APC, but I didnt find it very musical. The thing was growing up and up and now I am writing here (I still dont believe it)

Thanks for the great info on the modular. Very simple equals very good in my book, very nice design. So I guess your using single supply and mostly cmos chips in your design? might want to take a look over in the lunetta forum: http://electro-music.com/forum/forum-160.html

Ive been trying to find a good schematic for the wp-20 filter, how did you build it?
Im also very interested in your EG, how does it work? If you have one, a schematic would be appreciated . _________________ There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

skellz, good job! I hope I will be able to do something like this soon.

right

following the original schematics but using a TL081 and a V/2 virtual ground at pin 3. I also added a voltage in.

the clock pulse triggers the monostable. length, attack and decay times are set by the pots. Here you are

My mostly finished rebuild the first panel of my Serge and DIY modules. The screws will be covered by a wood strip when I get out the router. 2 more panels to go...

Nice restoration job did you do the printing on the panels yourself. Is that another serge i see in the background. |

I used Lazertran for the printing. Yes, that's another Serge/DIY panel in the background. I have 2 more I need to fix. _________________ life in many forms...

Skells, I'm curious as to how you built the Oakley diode ladder. Did you use an older pcb or do the layout yourself? _________________ DRONEGOAT |

Here is one of two Klee 2 sequencers I am building. I am attached a couple of views.
I built another when the Klee was first developed. This will make three so I get plenty practice building these.
I am also adding a MOD panel consisting of the following:
(1) Tap Tempo Clock Source
(1) Multi Waveform LFO
(1) 2 Range Digital Displays
(1) Multis with Attenuators
(1) MIDI CLK to CLOCK GEN with 1/8N, 1/16N, and 1/32N 5V pulsed outputs
(1) SYNC MANUAL LOAD
Two of these modifications can be seen in the Klee Sequencer Sub Forum.

Enjoy !

Hey thanks. Much care is taken so that the wiring is more "serviceable" friendly.
You know, I have been meaning to do You Tube videos for a while. This will be the incentive I suppose
Thanks again

Just finished up my new modules for this summer: two control sequencers, a new oscillator/lfo, and a utility panel for my breadbox enclosure. They are all mostly original designs, so I thought I'd explain each just a bit (sorry if it gets long):
The first sequencer is a circular control sequencer with internal or external clocking, direction switch, and a "voltage controlled" direction input jack (high= clockwise, low = counterclockwise). Each step has amount control, a switch for on/skip/reset, and external control input. It has two outputs, each with their own amount control.
The oscillator/lfo is a triple ramp/pulse generator based off of synthmongers vco. It operates in both high and low (lfo) frequencies. There are sync inputs, external control inputs, waveform selection switches, audio outputs, and control (lfo) outputs with amount knobs. There's only one chip in this thing, and I'm driving the hell out of it, so it definitely has some bleed-through problems, but each individual generator can be turned off, so that helps (the bleed-through can make for some interesting stuff though).
The second sequencer is a home grown grid sequencer. Back when I first heard about makenoise's rene sequencer, I though, "hey, I know how to do that," and so I spent a few months working on it and ended up with my take on it. There are two clock inputs (x and y), two direction switches (x righ/left and y up/down), and two external direction control jacks (x high/low for right/left and y high/low for up/down). A microcontroller combines the clock inputs to determine the current position and sends it to the grid through a decoder. The grid is 4x4, and there is a single output (with amount control) for each row and each column (rows 1,2,3,4, and columns 1,2,3,4). Each step has a level control and a switch for on/skip.
As I'm quickly running out of real-estate, I've had to start using my breadbox enclosure more, so I put a simple power input/three channel mixer in the remaining space and added a power distributer as well.
Sorry for the shitty pictures (I need a new camera...). I'm hoping to have some video up soon to help explain these things a little better. As always, many thanks go out to everyone here for all the help, and all the other stuff in here looks amazing!
