Enjoyed it, I tend to tune out and let things happen while I'm in the zone, so what I did focus on was cool.

I have missed uploading a few week's programs. I expect to download them later. But here is the recording from last Saturday, July 29, 2017.
It features Dale Parson, aka AcousticInterloper here on the forum, Bill Fox and myself. Dale played ZIM, Zero Input Mixer, throughout. He is really a master at ZIM. Not only can he make feeback noises and " crazy" sounds, but he can play distinct pitches to harmonize when Bill and I were playing more conventional pads, leads and guitar parts.
I must say, Bill and I really enjoyed playing with Dale on this set. The time flew by and we were all smiling when it was over. We look forward to doing this again.

Thanks so much for posting our set, Howard, and also for the kind words. The energy level was really high at the end of the hour. It was so cool!
Jeremy and I were discussing this set over dinner in a pub last night, and we got onto the subject of ZIM pitch & harmonizing. I said basically that it can be like fishing for the note on a violin -- my daughter Sierra and I took fiddle lessons together for about a year when she was 8-9 -- but unlike the violin, nobody expects you to hit the note on a ZIM. Therefore, if on the way to the consonant note, you happen to shoot right past it, just slide on up to the next consonant note, and then back down to the one you missed. Instead of playing A, B, where both are consonant, you play A, C, B. It's not really a cheat, because there are so many variables in a single ZIM channel, what with all the sliders and knobs that affect it, that you have to get better at finding your feet in the midst of the tune. He is eager to hear the recording, and I am eager to talk with him again, after he does.
I really enjoyed the evening. I promise to text you to play Chez Mosc again, on a Saturday when I don't have too many projects to grade coming in. I'd like to say September Equinox, but I really have to wait to see where assignment grading lines up. I have a lot of students this semester. I'll bring the electronic banjo, ebow, and some new Live patches for the occasion.
Looking forward to meeting you for lunch with John C. early in the semester. Take care.

I'd enjoy reading about the process of how and what you did. I'd find it interesting. Please share. _________________ Bill Fox------------------|\-------------

Hello Bill, thank you!
Back in the day I used to do stuff like this all the time, kind if a cheater way to emulate BBC Radiophonic Workshop-type of stuff, using n-Track on a 486 Windows machine and reading in CD's of pop music and reversing them to see what might be usable. What works best is if there's no reverb or drums/cymbals.
I would say that what I tried to do on this track was a pop arrangement (intro, verse, chorus, middle 8, turnaround, etc). That is pretty much my default. I recorded the show in Reaper, made a reverse copy and started listening for bits that might be a verse and built it out from there. I think most of the clips ended up being used non-reversed.
It really is an organic process now that you've got me thinking about it, just recognizing what might work together forwards or backwards. I do remember I wanted to use your tagline reversed at the end when I started with it but that ended up in the intro stacked with another reversed section of speech, and also in the middle.
The middle section is a stack of 6 stereo tracks that I hammered into a turnaround (back to the final "verse") and the the end (starting at 4:08 ) is a section by you guys that is played straight thru to the guitar figure at the end, but layered with a shorter repeating section of that same part, you can probably hear that.
Thanks for the single decaying drum shots, that helped!
The project file was cleaned up after being finalized so it would be a bit of a chore to see what exactly got reversed and/or where in the show it came from, but as I did try to keep things musically in a key (somewhat) much of what I used was probably from the same piece in the show.
I was most happy with the first "chorus" (a descending/ascending thing at 59 seconds) back to the second verse, which is a mix of 4 stereo tracks. That simple little thing came out so well it drove me to finish the track off.
The biggest issue I had was the ending. I didn't really listen critically to the piece til after I told Howard about it, and when he said let's hear it I discovered that that section was a total sonic mess. You guys would have been calling me Captain Phase Shift. It's still kind of shifty...
In all I spent over 10 hours putting it together, and another 2 trying to get things to sound half decent after talking to Howard. (This is another example of what happens when I am not properly supervised.)
Two plugins were used on the master track: ReaXcomp and Voxengo Stereo Touch, but if I were to do it again I would have used Limiter No6 by Vladislav Goncharov, as it totally rocks and is my go-to master track compressor in most cases. Dunno what happened there... |
