Subject description: Legatto portamento
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Hi:
I always liked legatto portamento (portamento is on only when you play
legatto), also called auto-glide.
To implement it I need the protamento on all time and turn it off briefly
when a gate-on is received, so when no gate-on is received the portamento
will be on.
To do that I need a negated trigger (an active low trigger). I used the
Ken Stone Gate to trigger as a base of the MOD. As I needed the trigger
inverted, I swapped the +- inputs of the opamp. Also I changed the 10nF
cap to a 100nF because the trigger was too short and didn't turn off the
portamento.
This circuit should be placed before the Gate input of the Yusynth Dual Slew.
Finally I added a switch to the frontpanel to select normal behaviour or
legatto portamento.
To get legatto portamento send the pitch CV to the input of the Slew, the
gate signal (from the MIDI-CV interface or keyboard) to the gate input of
the Slew, and the output of the Slew to the CV input of the VCO. And turn
on the mode switch.
Here are some pics and the MOD schematic:

Hi Sebo

Thanks for sharing this mod. I never tried this type of play (portamento only on legatto). I must give it a try.

Cheers

It seems that this is exactly what I was after all this time, I didn't knew its called Legato Portamento!
The same as the sh101 portamento, works only on Legato, this is perfect! Smile
Hope it will work for me.

Thanks Sebo!

Thanks Sebo!

I'll be using the EFM slide, glide module, it is also gated.
See here..
http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-61773.html

i also open a post about this way back..
http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-60295.html

You wont believe the way I did till I found your post!
I build 3 deferent portamentos, non of them did what I wanted.

You say the secret is the Legato?
Does the legato mode depends on the midi2cv code? Meaning..legato dosnt come as a default, it's depends on the code of the midi2cv, right?

i did a stripboard layout to your modded scheme, verified and works!

Thanks again!

Yes, the MIDI2CV have to have a Legato mode, if not, every note will have a gate, and the auto-glide will not work.
Most MIDI2CVs have a legato mode, and in many of them is the ONLY mode.
What MIDI2CV are you using?

oohhhhhh my dear F****** god!!!!! Very Happy
its working!!!!!!!!!!!
after 6 month of labor, hair stretching ,net searching and god knows what Laughing
i'm using the ACX midi2cv, works great and great features this module haves.
you can read all about it here:
http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/topic-93855-.htmlall&postdays=0&postorder=asc&sid=7165301cce79f57ca50c136866054b2a

now i need to tune it a bit.
when i'm on the gate mode and the pot is in any postion and press a note i can hear that its effect the vco by few cents down, meaning without making portamento , pressing notes one at a time.
the gate signal is somehow getting inside the cv circuit, maybe bleedthough?
do you have this case in the yusynth slew rate as well?
can you please make a test for me?
without the VCF and VCA, connect your midi2cv -->gate to trig-->dual slew rate--> VCO--> amplifier.
put the dual slew rate on gate mode, turn the pot say to half way, press any note but press the same note few times slowly, now, does this effect the vco pitch in anyway?
if not, i have a board of dual slew rate ready to solder right now!

thank you very much Sebo, you did my day (actually my night, its 1:16 after midnight now).

Hi, I'm glad it's working Smile
I dont have the problem you mention, when I play stacatto notes, the pitch is steady.

Hi Sebo.

I'm really trying to understand the logic behind the invert gate and come it influence the legato play to have legato portamento.
I was measuring the V out from the output of the gate to trig, it's on 13.3V, when pressing a note it's triggering down, I can't measure the low V after pressing a note.
Anyway, what's the logic behind this and how you come up with this idea?

Cheers

I explained in my first post, I don't know if I can explain it better...
What part you don't understand?

for example... why it must be always with V on and when hit a note it triggers down.
how exactly this influence the legato portamento?
why it must be trigger and not gate?
