| Many of you got your G2s early before the G2X arrived, which never gave you the option to choose between the two. What would you recommend or do yourself if you bought one today? |

Mostly it comes down to whether you want the 5 octave keyboard.
That's just a matter of where and how you plan to use it.
The expansion is a must anyway.
The extra mod wheels are a nice plus for the G2X.
I like the 3-octave keyboard because it is more portable (in it's case, it can still go as carry-on on some airlines). |

| Get the synth that involves the most portable set-up. Do not automatically assume I mean "get the G2" (3 oct) by this... I do not consider myself a keyboardist, so I would choose the G2 again because of this. It is smaller and easier to move if need be. However, if you are a keyboardist, and know you'll be using those extra octaves...it makes more sense to get the G2X. Granted, you could just trigger the 3 oct G2 with a MIDI keyboard and get those extra octaves, but that is another peice of gear to hull around. |

| I guess I am caught in the middle. I like the portability, but the extra keys are of interest too. I have to continue ponder on this issue. One advantage with the G2 is the slightly lower cost incl exp. board. Thanks for your replies. |

I won't recommend anything as such, but will instead outline another possibility.
I bought a G2 Engine together with an expansion board, and use this currently with a cheap (100 euro) 4-octave Evolution MIDI keyoard. If I needed an analogue interface to more MIDI parameters, perhaps I'd buy something like a Behringer BCR2000, with its banks of led-lit knobs, but I'm happy with the editor and the Evolution keyboard's facilities. All my stuff cost little more than 1300 euros. Compare this with the cost of a G2 or G2X. Even if you were to opt for a more sophisticated MIDI keyboard costing several times as much as the Evolution (e.g., eBay #3765082763, ending 05-Dec-04 20:55:09 GMT - hint!), you'd still save money and have a very powerful and flexible setup.
Another reason for me to have an Engine rather than a G2 keyboard is that I intend to use the box also as an all-purpose signal processor with acoustic instruments and microphones. |

Absolutely, the G2 makes a great signal processor. Last night we were jamming and I was using my MIDI banjo with a GR-33 guitar synth. It's a great unit, but it needs post proessing, especially a compressor. The G2 is perfect for this - phaser shifters, chorus, filters, LFOs. delays, reverb, compressor. Build the chains anyway you like. Much better than a series of stomp boxes or a canned effects unit like those make by Boss and others.

I just received my G2X yesterday.... I really wanted to get an expanded G2 to save on cost but did not feel it was the best choice for my situation.
I went with the X because of the extra keys. I have an XTk which has 49 keys and I often find it is not enough.... especially when trying out patches..... they don't always span the keyboard consistently. I just couldn't do with only 37 keys.
