It's still a random conversation, but one I'd have been willing to engage with had I known it wasn't from an internet cafe in Shanghai...

Well, he hasn't been banned so he can still use his account here to post if he wants. Smile

About 2 weeks after my last update, I got laid off. I spent most of 2014 in varying levels of clinical depression where not a lot got done. I'm in a better headspace now, and am working again, and have restarted work on the Ultimate. I'm about 80% done with attaching the flying wires to the panel...

Good to see you back in the saddle. I just finished an Ultimate a couple months ago (for someone else) I definitely don't envy you the wiring Smile

Yeah, this is really putting me off on flying wires. To the point where I'm probably going to pay someone to wire the sequencer... Smile

Ok, time to start figuring out power routing and PCB placement!

It's the MFOS power supply, it doesn't come with any. I'll be ventilating the cabinet, we'll see how it goes.

Thermal shut down aprox. 45 seconds after loaded power up.

The layout on the mfos power pcb is a bit tight for installing , good , adequate heatsinks when using it for loads of around 100mA to 400mA , that's when we go off the board but there is a certain way to do it......

De-solder the regulators off the board , acquire some 3 core immersion water tank heater flex (1.5mm squ cable size 16Amps rated) , solder the cores of the flex to the pcb and run the wires to the regulators & heatshrink the connections , if you can't get good large finned sinks , use a 6" length of 5mm thick aluminium "L" for each diy heat sink , also get a kit of mica regulator insulators & a tiny thin scrape of heat compound / thermal grease between regulator & heat sink surface before nut & bolting them.

I use a 6mm or 8mm hex nut to distance fix the "L" bars off the wood.

here is a pic of one set of + & - heatsinks from the Orange synth I built.

I have about an inch separating gap between the L bars.

If you need any help give me a PM.

Thanks for the pics! I've added a couple of (smaller than those) heat sinks, I'll monitor the heat. Long term, I will have to replace the power supply, as this one will be maxed out with some blanks still left in the cabinet.

Smile

great , in the pic above i'm drawing 550mA approx. per regulator (1.5A adjustable regs) , the + bar gets warm after a few hours use .

I read through all 7 pages of your build and it seems you will be drawing somewhere around 300mA per regulator (1A - 7812 / 7912) with the modules you have , that's good , regulators seem happiest when running at half or less their max current load while attached to a good heatsink .

The other important thing in this chain is the user purchased wall wart or desktop resin block power pack .
You may find a 1.2A or 1.5A AC wart /power pack to be the ideal choice.

Keep up the great build Smile , I'm looking forward to hearing your sound demos when finished Smile

Dave.
