In C is a piece written in 1964 by Terry Riley. It's intended for any number of players and/or singers, and gives its performers an unusual amount of control over a piece that is nevertheless written out as a musical score.

I got invited to participate in a performance of this piece this past spring at College of St. Elizabeth in northern New Jersey. I had so much fun that I want to give others a similar opportunity.

You can see and hear a nice performance of the piece on Youtube divided into four
parts.

The score consists of 53 short musical phrases and two pages of instructions. Basically the idea is that there is a steady, brisk 8th-note pulse (I'd like to try for at least quarter-note = 110) throughout the piece. Acoustic performances often use a piano or xylophone; I intend to use a sequencer.

In time with this pulse, everyone starts playing the first phrase repeatedly. Each player plays each phrase some number of times and then moves onto the next. The music ends after everyone has reached the last phrase and coalesced into a unison.

Current plans are for a practice session from 1-2 PM on Saturday and the performance from 10:30-11PM on Sunday. Everyone is welcome who can play the notes reasonably accurately in tempo, with or without electronic assistance. I've attached MIDI files for people who might want to use sequencers. However, these files have extra silence at the end that was introduced by the program I used to write them--so you'll have to adjust the lengths to match the score. I'll update this message if I figure out how to fix that.

If you're interested, I encourage you to download and print the score as soon as possible, and play through it until you're comfortable with it. Most of the fragments are quite simple, but a few of them are harder than they look at first.

If you have any questions, please post them. I think this is going to be fun!

Andrew, it looks like the volunteer schedule leaves me open to participate, so count me in on 5 string banjo. My favorite recording is by Bang on a Can, with Wu Man on pipa, have listened to that one about a gazillion times. Ready to give it a shot!

I'm in too, on a sequenced soft synth to be determined. Leaning towards emulated Minimoog, or possibly sampled Rhodes, or possibly a third thing.

Andrew - any idea how many performers we're looking at?

Cheers,

Not a clue. I've gotten 3 or 4 people expressing interest in advance, but I expect we'll see more than that.

Thank you for putting this together, Andrew! Will a recording of the performance be posted here? Would be fun to hear it.

I believe that Paul recorded everything off the stream, in which case we should be able to get a copy.

We do have the recording, I can post it here once I get some time - I am still not home yet... Or Jez can if he reads this. He has the backup copy - Howard has all the originals too. It needs some editing.
