Would this be a useful module? |

I am thinking about producing an analog oscillator module that is MIDI controlled. It does not have an envelope, but will have a an amplitude modulator built-in. You would wire a gate trigger to an external envelope. I am thinking I could provide a a few 256-step linear CVs: three from definable CC values, one from the note number, one from note velocity, a gate (note on/off) and a pulse trigger (note on).
How much effort I put into this project would depend on if others think this would be a useful module. Essentially it is a single-channel MIDI-CV interface, but with an oscillator built in.

A single oscillator taking a midi in, with no cascading or CV output to make further use of the midi commands (CC? gate derived from note on/off?) seems like a lot of work for a single sound source. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

I've thought about that same sort of thing several times, but I've never convinced myself it makes sense.
As far as what you're talking about, it reminds me of Mr Miyagi's story in the Karate Kid. You either learn a lot of Karate, or no Karate at all. If you go halfway, you get squashed like a grape.
I think you can either offer a really nice Midi interface for a good price point, or pursue your idea to its fullest and offer a module with multiple Midi driven oscillators. Either one would be useful. Offering a single Osc with a midi interface is maybe not as useful.
I've been thinking about doing something like that with direct wavetable oscillators - unfortunately I'm so stacked up right now with other projects that it will take me forever to pursue it.
Best Wishes

if its gonna be a DCO or a wavetable DCO you have the advantage of using as many OSC's as your cpu can put out. its sometimes easier to get fake filter effects by scanning through wavetables that have more or less filtering as you scan through the table.
we have a lot of wavetable, DCO, multi osc modules already so maybe it would be more of the same with the added cost and redundancy of midi
I would much rather you focus your time on getting the oakley mididac to output a proper trigger and better options for first note, last note, high note, low note priority. you could use the existing panel. just make it send triggers out the legato output. perfecto. |
