Hi! I have decided I want a MIDI controller so I am not limited to the sounds from my Xstation. Specifically, Ableton has these awesome VSTs!

I have been thinking about a MIDI controller. Most likely the Novation SLMK25. But I am not sure if this machine will do everything I want it to. Basically I want to be able to play an Ableton loop, while at the same time using a different Ableton instrument to play in real time. For instance, an arpeggio. I want to be able to assign a controller knob to switch instruments in Ableton.

I have never owned a MIDI controller--up till now, all I knew was that a MIDI keyboard could play a sound supplied by Reason or a VST. Perhaps I am expecting too much?

Oh, and I have also heard you could control a video performance through Ableton? I assume you would have to have a powerful laptop for all of this. I am planning to buy my first laptop next year (after I learn about all the other stuff.) What kind of laptop memory would I need for all of this?

My ambitions about next year's E-M performance have expanded considerably!!

Laura

Hi Laura,

That keyboard should be fine, look at http://www.novationmusic.com/products/midi_controllers/sl_mkii/Ableton_Users/ for an overview.

Max4live allows video control using jitter, I am not sure if there are other solutions.

Concerning laptops, most will handle this sort of stuff nowadays, just get a decent amount of Ram.

Cheers

Andy
