Mark Jenkins, AI, et. al., Kutztown PA, March 20, 2012 Subject description: Acoustic Interloper & students host our second planetarium gig |
|
|
Calendar Event: March 20, 2012 On Tuesday, March 20, 2012 Dr. Phill Reed of the Physical Sciences Department and I will host the second electro-music event to be held in the Grim Planetarium on the campus of Kutztown University of PA from 7 until 9 PM. Directions are here and a campus map is here. The event is free and open to the public.
The featured performer for this event will be Mark Jenkins of the UK. Mark's performance and technical presentation will be followed by a technical talk and performance by yours truly, Acoustic Interloper, along with some of my students.
The basic agenda for the evening is:
1. Mark will perform the 48-minute show "Supernova", including custom planetarium video projection tailored to the piece.
2. Mark will give a talk / demo on composing, performing and publishing music using the iPad.
3. Mark will perform a somewhat shorter piece(s) on iPad(s), in part to illustrate aural material from the talk.
4. Acoustic Interloper will give a talk on a game-to-MIDI algorithmic improvisation software tool currently under construction that maps a 3D computer word game played on the planetarium dome to spatial music played on the planetarium Surround Sound System.
5. AI and students will give a 10 to 15 minute performance of that software instrument.
Mark is planning to send me some promotional materials in a few weeks, which I will post here, with periodic bumps in this thread as the event approaches.
Depending on the success of a few of these events, I am considering hosting a two-day regional electro-music festival in the planetarium, with summer 2013 being the earliest possible time frame. A lot of people have expressed interest in playing the planetarium, and a regional festival would present an opportunity. Neither Phill Reed nor I can remotely consider doing such a thing during a semester because of our work load, and summer 2012 is booked for both of us. But, depending on the success of these more limited seminars, that regional event could happen.
Images from the September 7, 2011 event are posted here, recordings and technical slides are posted here. _________________ When the stream is deep

Mark sent some promotional photos. I've been working away on my musical game-for-planetarium all day.

Jeremy and I did a dry run in my study tonight, with a sound system and video test session in the planetarium last Friday. If our piece comes off anywhere as well as it just sounded and looked in my study, it'll be FAR OUT! _________________ When the stream is deep

I posted some photos that my wife Linda took here. The evening was a success, thanks to everyone who came out. We had around 50 people, I think. No audio samples for this one, although my students and I have another gig with this software coming up on Saturday, I plan to record and post it. _________________ When the stream is deep

Would have loved to get there to see the performance! Unfortunately I was a bit under the weather to make the drive out. I did see him at the Warren County Library gig on Wednesday and at Soundscapes on Friday. Great shows! _________________ Dave

Here's is a photo of Mark, Howard and Bill Fox outside the planetarium venue (not sure who took it), along with a 16 minute sample of the piece that my students and I played, albeit 11 days later at the http://www.pacise.org annual regional computing conference. Matt Basta and Jeremy Parson played the graphical game, and I generated music from the game state. Voices include various Applied Acoustics soft synths (driven from the game) and some of my blues harmonica playing at a few places.
