I'm looking for a simple (free) software to play wav files or loops. Should be able to play multiple loops of different length simultaneously, with triggering and volume control of each via midi. Is there anything like that?

And, as always, ChucK (if you feel like a bit of programming)!

(feel free to smack me over the head if I'm acting too much like a repeating parrot...) rabbit

I will check Ambiloop too, and see if it's stable enough to use for performances.

Mobius should be able to do what you want. The scripting feature can really let you do a lot of interesting things with it. Not sure about nw but you used to be able to have 16 or more loops going, depending on computer power.
